GOP buttons on their shirts and faith on their sleeves
Republican convention draws religious conservatives

Lt. Col. Brian Birdwell offered a greeting to delegates to the Republican convention. "It's great to be back in the holy land," the Fort Worth native said to the cheers of the party faithful. For the 4,500 delegates at last week's biennial gathering, it was both an expression of conservative philosophy and religious faith, a melding of church and state.

At Saturday morning's prayer meeting, party leader Tina Benkiser assured them that God was watching over the two-day confab.

"He is the chairman of this party," she said against a backdrop of flags and a GOP seal with its red, white and blue logo.

The party platform, adopted Saturday, declares "America is a Christian nation" and affirms that "God is undeniable in our history and is vital to our freedom."

"We pledge to exert our influence toward a return to the original intent of the First Amendment and dispel the myth of the separation of church and state," it says.

religious insanity is like a virus

Brian Birdwell should not be an officer in the military, he's insane.

6. blue Texan
As an expatriate Texan (now in Seattle), I suppose absence makes the heart grow fonder. In spite of the heat, humidity, fire ants, drought, tornadoes, wildfires, floods, rednecks (my relatives), and even in spite of George Bush, I still love Texas. But this "back in the holy land" crap is just nauseating. Having grown up among these braindead bullhorn bigots, I'm not even slightly surprised. Just disappointed that my native land remains to socially and emotinally retarded (or, it sometimes seems, gets steadily moreso). Sigh.

7. yup
I lived in England for four years, and the cognitive dissonance is astounding. Sometimes I think I must be imaginging things. That outwardly healthy-looking adults would believe the things they do, say the things they do. It baffles. :eyes:

8. When did Israel give up its status as the Holy Land?
Israel is the crossroads of the three major religions. Has there been a huge building boom of synagogues and mosques in Texas?

9. I apologize on behalf of sane Texans everywhere.
We DO exist (see Natalie Maines) we do seem to be burdened with an overabundance of dunces, dolts, dunderheads, and dildi, however and for this we beg your indulgence. We intend to spray for them just as soon as Texas A & M perfects a ecologically friendly, biodegradable gopicide agent.

10. OK...I say we let ALL the religious fundies have Texas as THEIR Holy Land
and we normal SANE people get the rest of the country. Whatcha' say?

I think we need a revolution against the insane assholes who are running our country. This is waaaay out of hand. I see homeschooling in my future. The day they start praying in schools is the day my son stops going.

15. Report from the Texas Republicans' Convention in 2002....
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 12:54 PM by Bridget Burke
From the Texas Observer.

Elephant Wars

The Christian Right Flexes Its Muscle at the Republican Convention

BY JAKE BERNSTEIN

he 2002 Texas Republican Party platform depicts a twilight looking-glass world. It’s a place beset by enemies, where the purity of the culture, under constant siege, must be protected from threats both internal and external. Congress is urged "to deploy our military forces to secure our international borders." Immigration must be severely restricted.

If these safeguards fail, the contagion of the foreign horde must be controlled and quarantined. The platform calls for "deportation of aliens if they do not carry the required ID." Illegal immigrants should not be granted drivers’ licenses. Voter registration is to be made more difficult. "American English" is the official language of the state and "the Party supports the termination of bilingual education programs in Texas."

A plank entitled "equality for all citizens" urges the repeal of hate crimes legislation. Another states: "We oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values." Since the Bible is the Truth, teachers should have the right to instruct their public school students in "creation science." And those women who choose to terminate their pregnancies should be charged criminally. Lest anyone forget, "America is a Christian nation."....
