Singer Tim McGraw Eyes Politics ~ Clinton encouraging him.
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 06:24 PM by mzmolly
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060113/ap_en_ot/music_governor_mcgraw

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Country singer Tim McGraw says he wants to run for office someday in his adopted home state of Tennessee — perhaps for governor or U.S. senator — and he's getting encouragement from a fellow Democrat, former President Clinton.

"I think he's got it," Clinton says of McGraw in an Esquire magazine story that hits newsstands Monday. "The Democrats need candidates whom people can relate to in a personal way, people who understand their lives and their concerns and share their values. And I think that's something Tim can do without even pretending."

An aside: I've suggested that the DNC invite country singers to appeal to Red States in the 08 elections? We've got some big name singers who are Dems. Trish Yearwood, The Dixie Chicks, Mc Graw and Faith Hill ... I'm not a country music fan myself, but I just might start supporting some of these "folks."

was my first baseball hero...so I've got a soft spot in my heart for his son. I'm so happy he's a Dem. I do hope he runs....

2. Agreed, there are some good Dems in the Country music world
Though these guys are far from "mainstream" modern country, add Steve Earle and of course, Willie Nelson to that list.

7. Don't feel bad, the closest my collection comes to "country" is classic
Johnny Cash, and some Bonny Rait. Is Bonnie even considered country? I think she's more blues? ;)

His C&W hit "Indian Outlaw" pissed me off. If you are going to write about "Indians," at least learn how to spell "chieftain."

I'm an Indian outlaw
Half Cherokee and Choctaw
My baby she's a Chippewa
She's one of a kind

All my friends call me Bear Claw
The Village Cheaftin' is my paw-paw
He gets his orders from my maw-maw
She makes him walk the line

You can find me in my wigwam
I'll be beatin' on my tom-tom
Pull out the pipe and smoke you some
Hey and pass it around

'Cause I'm an Indian outlaw
Half Cherokee and Choctaw
My baby she's a Chippewa
She's one of a kind

I ain't lookin' for trouble
We can ride my pony double
Make your little heart bubble
Lord like a glass of wine

I remember the medicine man
He caught runnin' water in my hands
Drug me around by my headband
Said I wasn't her kind

'Cause I'm an Indian outlaw
Half Cherokee and Choctaw
My baby she's a Chippewa
She's one of a kind

I can kill a deer or buffalo
With just my arrow and my hickory bow
From a hundred yards don't you know
I do it all the time

They all gather 'round my teepee
Late at night tryin' to catch a peek at me
In nothin' but my buffalo briefs
I got 'em standin' in line

'Cause I'm an Indian outlaw
Half Cherokee and Choctaw
My baby she's a Chippewa
She's one of a kind

Cherokee people
Cherokee tribe
So proud to live
So proud to die

41. Are you an American Indian? If not, you have no business being snotty
about this.

What's your ethnicity? If you're Italian, would you have liked it if he sang about the happy, stupid wops stomping their grapes?

If there's something that black Americans find offensive, but I don't, I defer to their opinion and have the manners not to tell them to lighten up, because I have no right to judge for them. THEY are the only ones who can make that decision.

I'd suggest that you act the same regarding American Indians.

48. Actually I do have some American Indian heritage, as does McGraw.
Not that that has anything to do with anything at all.

I was just laughing at the business about "He's sure to get elected but I won't support him because he did a cheesy song years ago." The antics of the purists around here never cease to amuse.

43. You know
That was one of his first songs.
He is of Native American heritage.
I don't agree with the song, but the kid just sang what some producer told him to sing.
I'm not gonna hold it against him.
He is a good guy. He has grown up now.
We all do stupid things when we are young.
I will attribute to this being his.
And yes, I have a Native American heritage as well. Sometimes you just gotta let things go.
Now, when he has the choice of what he will and won't sing, I would hold him responsible.

I like country and would love to have Faith Hill and Tim McGraw at the next convention. They do so beautiful together in duets. *sigh* And yes the Dixie Chicks should be there too. Take that republicans! We got country singers too! I didn't know Yearwood was a democrat (on edit). Love her more now! Does anybody know what LeAnn Rimes is? I only ask because I saw an episode of MTV "Cribs" once with LeAnn and they were showing one of her houses and her husband showed a picture of her with Clinton. They didn't show any other president there and I think this was after Clinton was president in the early 2000's.

30. This is a good idea.
I'm pleased that McGraw is a Democrat and I hope he decides to run for office.

It's no accident that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are my favorite country music singers. I recently saw Tim's biography and I was so impressed with how he overcame so many obstacles in his life. He was so open and forgiving to his father, baseball legend Tug McGraw, who didn't pay child support or even acknowledge that Tim was his son all the while he was growing up. That changed because of Tim's persistance to get to know his dad and eventually they developed a close relationship.

Faith Hill has an equally compelling story and when they met sparks flew. They seem to be made for each other. When I hear them sing together it gives me goosebumps!

Unfortunatly, Tim is the overproduced pop-country variety. But, he seems like a good person, and being from Philly, I loved the Tugger.
