| George W. Bush on 9/11: "But the day ended on a relatively humorous note." |
|
Ladies Home Journal: Peggy Noonan (the interviewer): You were separated on September 11th. What was it like when you saw each other again? Laura Bush: Well, we just hugged. I think there was a certain amount of security in being with each other than being apart. George W. Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note. The agents said, “you’ll be sleeping downstairs. Washington’s still a dangerous place.” And I said no, I can’t sleep down there, the bed didn’t look comfortable. I was really tired, Laura was tired, we like our own bed. We like our own routine. You know, kind of a nester. I knew I had to deal with the issue the next day and provide strength and comfort to the country, and so I needed rest in order to be mentally prepared. So I told the agent we’re going upstairs, and he reluctantly said okay. Laura wears contacts, and she was sound asleep. Barney was there. And the agent comes running up and says, “We’re under attack. We need you downstairs,” and so there we go. I’m in my running shorts and my T-shirt, and I’m barefooted. Got the dog in one hand, Laura had a cat, I’m holding Laura — Laura Bush: I don’t have my contacts in , and I’m in my fuzzy house slippers — George W. Bush: And this guy’s out of breath, and we’re heading straight down to the basement because there’s an incoming unidentified airplane, which is coming toward the White House. Then the guy says it’s a friendly airplane. And we hustle all the way back up stairs and go to bed. Mrs. Bush: And we just lay there thinking about the way we must have looked.
Peggy Noonan (interviewer): So the day starts in tragedy and ends in Marx Brothers.
George W. Bush: That’s right — we got a laugh out of it.
NEVER FORGET THIS. http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:pRBnvN8LyE0J:thism...

Bush allowed himself to be protected, managed, and whisked out of sight on Sep 11. All day. Never once thinking that it was his job to show his face, take control, and provide leadership. I was absolutely appalled at the time.
Now it turns out that the one time on Sep 11 he stood up to his handlers and insisted on living dangerously was because the bed looked uncomfortable. God.

| 94. yes -- I was thinking, "couldn't he even manage a radio broadcast?" |
|
So maybe they couldn't put together an emergency TV message live from AF1 (although this is the administration that spends millions of dollars on staged photo-ops so you 'd think they could at least put some of that communications expertise to work). But even the sound of a President's voice could have helped calm people down and reassure the nation that the world wasn't coming to an end. I remember how upset people were at DU, as the hours dragged by and Bush showed no signs of emerging from his hidey-hole.
I watched that sorry attempt at propaganda (the White House-endorsed "DC 9/11" movie) where they tried to convince us that Bush got mad at being whisked away. It ended up looking like an ineffectual hissy fit ... if he were really in charge, they'd have listened to him! So either he wasn't in charge ... or he is lying about his reaction that day, and never wanted to be out there leading the country.
And to think I even worried about whether he was okay.

I love that Rumsfeld is reading crap at his desk all bored that morning then the Pentagon is HIT, and next we see RUMMY RUNNING along side a guy on a stretcher and HE'S HOLDING THE IV BAG! It's not like he had anything to do that morning..
But the best was, in the AF1 when someone, I think it was ARI comes rushing into the pRez's "office" and says, "Sir, there's a Plane that could be considered a Threat.."
Bush jumps up and says, "Is it a Credible Threat?"
I was on the FLOOR laughing, so goddamn phony..
Don't forget that IN that movie Cheney ORDERS FLIGHT93 SHOT DOWN, and I bet you haven't see that anywhere else since.. remember the guy that made that movie was a right winger and they even used CANADIAN money to Make the film, that's what kind of Cheating shits they are..
It really is a Funny movie, as it's SHEER proganda, and on such a trailer park mentality.. they even used the guy that was the Bush in "That's My Bush" created by the South Park guys, so the whole movie I'm waiting for this guy to act like a comedian..
I have to get another copy of that film, gave the one I video taped to a friend and never got it back, it's freakin HILARIOUS! (Considering the circumstances)

|
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 12:47 PM by Lisa
... on the DVD! (Only, don't do it on a full stomach.) If anything, it's even better than a "Mystery Science Theatre 3000" critique.
The filmmakers are so pro-Bush I thought that they were doing a satire like Stephen Colbert ... but it turned out that they were SERIOUS. They spend the whole film just patting each other on the back for how clever they are. But they were so eager to make Bush appear godlike that it actually got in the way of a sympathetic portrayal -- and they didn't even realize that. So much for their Hollywood credentials ... one would think that they would at least have some rudimentary skills in storytelling and how to create sympathetic characters. Evidently not.
DC 9/11 isn't even decent propaganda, it's so poorly done. "Casablanca" is proof that you can have a propaganda-ish flick which is also excellent on its own merits. About the only story that would seem halfway plausible and appealing would have Bush starting out as a doofus but maturing (that old Hollywood standby) ... but heaven forfend them showing flaws in their hero. So the character starts out as a plaster icon and has no place to go from there.
Suffice it to say that their version of "drama" has Bush uncapping a Sharpie marker with his teeth, to show how firm and decisive he is. And the scene where he is all fatherly and reassuring towards a nervous and indecisive Cheney! Has to be seen to be believed.
And you're absolutely right -- they did make the film in Canada, getting tax credits from my home province to do so.
I ended up feeling sorry for Timothy Bottoms. He seemed uncomfortable on the commentary track, with all the Bush adulation from the filmmakers. He ended up talking about the itchy rash that afflicted him (I swear I'm not making this up) during the shoot. Maybe that accounts for the strained look on his character's face? By the way, some of my friends in the Santa Barbara area say that his whole family are big-time Dems who are active in the local party ... so I'm not blaming him for either taking the role or having it turn out to be such a fiasco. Not his fault that the filmmakers gave him such ludicrous lines ... or subbed in footage of the actual Bush at crucial points, destroying his character portrayal.
The whole thing reminded me of that "Red Dwarf" episode where the egotistical Rimmer makes a film about his life ... and his friends are totally shocked at how contrived his version of reality is.

And I don't believe she had a decent sleep for weeks afterwards. She is furious at Bush because the airline people knew something was up, as early as August ... and knowing that Bush had been given the information but ignored it because he was on holiday is VERY frustrating and disappointing to her.
I've heard of "black humor" being used to alleviate stress, but Bush's comments suggest he was under NO stress at all and didn't understand the seriousness of what was going on (or that he was at the very least partly responsible for how chaotic things were). Imagine, joking about "there's one terrible pilot" as a plane crashed into the WTC ... or even thinking, in subsequent months, that people would find his remark funny.

He lies about everything, what in gods name makes us believe he didn't lie about 9/11? Thousands of people were killed that day and they continue to only think of themselves. They feel no remorse, no regret and no sense of empathy. All they can worry about is how "stupid" THEY look. I'm sure FDR was just laughing his ass off the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. The psychologists at Nuremberg said that the nazi's were monsters. They gave a description as to what a monster was: a person who is unable to feel empathy. I loath, hate and despise this worthless thing* that is called a human* which is impersonating a president. moron* - our own Ivan the Terrible.

An absolute, complete, bastard!
The night of September 11th, my wife and I were wide awake in bed, glued to the TV like EVERYONE ELSE IN AMERICA EXCEPT GEORGE BUSH.
I was utterly horrified to realize that when I heard a plane fly overhead that night, it wasn't a routine inbound flight to KBOS or KBED, but it was an F-15 Eagle armed to the teeth there to protect us as best as it could.
And he's there laughing?

I remember lying in bed at midnite and the first fighter jet flew over and I freaked out and ran to the window. I remember talking to my husband and saying 'that sounded like a fighter, not a commercial plane, right?' They did at least 3 flyovers that night. (We lived near Boston at the time.) I actually got out of bed at 4am to go on the back deck and tried to 'look for the plane'. Couldn't see jack, but that's how unnerved I was. I guess Deciders don't feel that level of insomnia like we normal humans do...

I remember what I was doing the night after the attacks too. At the time I was living in the UK, where I felt no personal threat...and yet I lay awake most of the night, alternately crying for those lost and worrying helplessly what might happen to my country next. We'd had friends and neighbors by all afternoon and evening and I certainly didn't stop to think about how I looked to them -- somehow I think they probably understood my puffy eyes and weary shell-shocked look!!
I have nothing but contempt and a deep abiding hatred for the Bushes** and their superficial, self-absorbed moments of "humor".

My husband was lying there next to me, he was staring at the ceiling. I kept getting up to check on the kids...
Good to see our Decider was hard at work. And that when the Secret Service finally DID do their job, that he promptly blew them off because "the bed didn't look comfortable". You arrogant bastard... "They got a laugh out of it..."
I feel sick.

I live just outside of D.C., less than 10 miles from the Pentagon as the crow flies, I saw the smoldering ruins of the Pentagon on my way home that evening, and I didn't sleep a wink that night, I too had fighter jets buzzing the house all night long.
I was definitely freaked out. I kept seeing those people jumping out of windows in my head over and over again.
Scumbags, both of them.

I'm near Dulles. I normally hear the sounds of the passenger jets as they prepare to take off. The night was unnaturally quiet without those sounds. The stacked planes normally form "the constellation of Dulles". Those stars did not shine that night nor the following two nights.
A friend who works the gates still had to report for work, even though there were no flights. One of the passengers on one of those non-flights refused to open his briefcase for inspection before boarding the plane. Her super let the man go anyway. Friend suspected the briefcase was full of US currency the man was taking back to Saudi on the non-flight.

There is nothing funny about 9/11 and there is something seriously wrong with all three of these idiots.

Edited on Wed May-31-06 01:07 PM by Tin Man
I was transfixed by the TV all morning. By lunch, I couldn't stand anymore, so I decided it was best to get to work on my roof, which I happened to be in the middle of replacing during the wonderful stretch of sunny weather. But while on the roof, my minds-eye kept replaying the images from NYC and DC - the explosions, fires, and collapsing buildings. As I nailed-off the plywood sheathing, lemme tell ya, I took out my anger on those nails. I knocked the shit outta every nail I drove that day - as a result, I expect a tornado couldn't budge the roof from my house.
I don't recall laughing or even cracking a smile that entire day...

real fuckin funny Shrub. The only thing I can laugh at about that day is when I had just awoken to those horrible images on TV, after working the night shift and being called from work by my girlfriend, and I heard someone outside my bedroom window walking around my yard. Wild thoughts of a full blown attack on America started going through my head (think of the movie Red Dawn)...I grabbed my shotgun and ran to the front door to have a look.... and it turned out to be the lawncare guys ...That I can now laugh at myself about...I spent the rest of the day glued to the TV, dazed and occasionally crying...and I certainly DID NOT sleep that night.

Actually, I read this article when it first came out. Must have been in some waiting room because I don't ordinarily read LHG or GH or whatever. Tried talking to some folks at the time about it. Like, are these statements of a person with a rational mind? Didn't seem to make an impression. Guess I wasn't using a big enough megaphone.

Reading that book with the hard words to the kids, getting interrupted in the middle. I imagine it was pretty hard to ignore your aide whispering to you while you were trying to read out loud.
Then having to go from one hidey-hole to the next before getting home for the night. I glad they slept well.
Too bad about 3000 Americans never had a chance to go to bed that night, or ever again.

Never mind those whose loved ones had died, but at least they had a chance to love. And it is better to have loved and lost.
No doubt they're meant for each other.

that is one of the most amazing details to me.
Who else in the whole fucking country was in bed at 10PM on 9/11?
No one I know.

| 111. So why wasn't he scared or worried? |
|
There could be only one reason -- because he knew he was safe.
The fact that he was so jovial also indicates that he doesn't have the capacity for empathy.
Put the two together and it appears more like MIHOP than LIHOP, because with the latter there would still be that sense of not knowing -- which I imagine almost everyone else in the US had -- whether there would be further attacks and whether he was in danger. But he was so totally unconcerned he went to bed early.
This goes along with his writing in his diary when he went to bed that night (from Paul Thompson's 9/11 Timeline) that this was a new Pearl Harbor....right out of the playbook of the PNACs.
I couldn't sleep well for days, and felt such horror, heartbreak and grief there's no way I could have laughed and joked around. I don't personally know anyone who didn't react like I did.

he's not talking about anything related to "presidenting" or policy. When he's yukkin' it up, he speaks just fine.
Methinks that should be an indicator that he should NOT be running this country.

|
In fact, he wrote an entire book about it called "The Bush Dyslexicon." I haven't read it but he makes reference to it in his later books, which I'm currently reading. His thesis is that Bush's verbal bloopers ALWAYS relate to concepts and emotions he's not comfortable with, such as "democracy" or "compassion."

| 130. Gee George I was up waiting for my husband to get home from NYC |
|
He'd been standing outside the Trade Center when the planes hit. His cell phone worked so I knew he was alive.
There were alot of people waiting for loved ones. Most had no idea where their loved ones were. Three thousand of them never came home.
It's so nice to know that George & Laura were "nesting" that night.
Maybe other presidents had equally humanizing moments when disaster struck. Maybe Franklin and Eleanor "nested" right after Pearl Harbor.
Somehow I doubt it. What an asshole.

|
was going back to the bunker and asking Richard Clarke&al to pin this on Saddam. Didn't bother to go to NYC for 4 days - Clinton was there faster from Australia. I remember clearly, weeks after 911, a bus rider started yelling at the driver and an argument ensues. Several people commented: "Thank god, back to normal" Up to that moment, everyone was speaking in hush voices and was excessively polite to each other. It was creepy. That actually goes well with the news that Homeland security just cut NYC funds. I suppose some red staters are in more danger than us...

That one worked, and I appreciate it! But I must say I almost lost my lunch when I saw this: Noonan: What do you say to those who are not especially religious, some of whom are very put off by your religious faith? What do you say so they won't be put off or frightened?
President Bush: You shouldn't fear a religious person. The Bible talks about love and compassion and to whom much has been given, much is required. That's really a lot behind my passion on AIDS policy, for example. As the President, I believe in a pluralistic society. I believe people can choose whatever religion they choose. It's not my job -- nor the government's -- to dictate religion. On the other hand, I would hope it would give people great comfort to know there's a religious person holding the office. Bust out the hip-boots and waders, kids - it's getting deep around here! Honestly, I can't decide which emoticon to use after that - the laughing one, the crying one, the flaming one or the puking one!

...and believe me, if you think it looks bad in print, wait until you hear it read aloud. All interested parties are directed to the MP3 download of the show, courtesy of Ben Burch and The White Rose Society: http://www.whiterosesociety.org/James.html Guy was in a pretty "fed up" mood yesterday, shaking his head in disbelief over the 29% who still back Junior. It's a MANDATE! He's got political capital, and he intends to SPEND it!

I especially enjoyed this article on Raw Story today...lets you know how Bush currently stands among his own party: Bush shows up at fundraiser to find Maryland candidate has already flown away RAW STORY Published: Thursday June 1, 2006 http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Maryland_candidate_bo... Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, the party’s U.S. Senate candidate, joined the list of Republicans who had to be somewhere else when Bush came to town to raise money for the GOP. Steele, instead, was at a fundraising event in Las Vegas. Nothing personal, Steele spokesman Doug Heye told the local Balitmore Sun. The candidate had a “long-standing previous commitment” to attend the Vegas event at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
