Bush vows to help create 'peaceful' Cuban government
Fri May 19, 8:54 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President George W. Bush said the United States was committed to helping Cubans create "peaceful" government in a message ahead of the island's independence day.

"The United States is committed to advancing the values that sustain liberty and helping establish a just and peaceful government in Cuba," Bush said in a message for the 104th anniversary of Cuban independence celebrated Saturday.

"On this anniversary of Cuba's independence, we look forward to the day when Cuba embraces democracy and human rights for all her people," he said.

Bush's message came after the State Department announced the postponement of a report from the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, an advisory panel created in 2003 to help hasten the demise of Fidel Castro's regime

4. I once was a dupe and believed Cuba was evil
but I met a very wise old bus driver in my travels to work. We were discussing warm places to vacation. He said he had been going to Cuba for years, before and after the revolution.

He said Castro and the revolution did help the people. Before the revolution there was a huge population of poverty. People starved and had no education or medical care. Now everyone eats, is educated and has medical care. It's not the extreme capitalism of the USA where there are extreme sides of rich and poor but more even. He says the people there tell him they are much happier than before the revolution.

I'm sure Bush licks his chops with the thought of conquering Cuba. I hope he gets his just desserts.

13. What the bus driver said is so consistant with what I've heard from others
who have been there personally. The life expectancy has risen to U.S. levels, and the infant mortality rate is far lower now.

Amazing, when you consider this has been accomplished during 45+ years of a crushing embargo.

Welcome to D.U., Truthy Nessy! :hi: :hi: :hi:

6. Not US oil but Cuban oil
Have you heard how irate Congress is that oil drilling in the waters near Cuba is restricted? China has bought the rights to drill in Cuban waters for oil....Do I hear an invasion coming on? Just 90 miles from American soil.

16. Add this to the twist
bush* also says, "A free nation is a peaceful nation." I always thought that this statement was an admission that we have fallen into fascism.

15. The moment Castro dies we invade and turn the whole thing into a Hilton.
And I get just a little physically ill every time I think about it. We'll pave paradise and put up a parking lot.
