3. The Original Progressive!
I first met studs in 1970...I was a kid and sat in on his WFMT Radio show...he was discussing the corruption of Nixon (this was before Watergate had even broken ground) and kept looking at me (I was 13 or so at the time) and kept saying "we need to make this a better world for that young man..." with a fire in his voice and eyes that have become legendary. Seeing it first-hand and having had the chance to encounter the man in and around Chicago all these years I am grateful for every day he walks this earth and every time I can hear or read his thoughts on the world which we live.

My late father grew up in 20's and 30's world Studs did...when Chicago was the meat-packer to the world and the unions had become the social and financial lifeboat for many immigrant and low income families during the depression. He was a direct political decendent of Emma Goldman, Eugene Debs, Robert LaFollette and carried their ideals and passions to the present day.

Happy Birthday Studs...here's hoping there's many more nights we can hear you atop your soapbox in Bughouse Square!

Studs, I would be happy to be half the man you are. He's a great observer.

6. Happy Birthday, Studs Terkel!
I love Studs Terkel, to read and to listen to. What a wonderful, kind-hearted treasure--the greatest writer of what America means, and all that it means, since Walt Whitman. Studs Terkel invented the modern "oral history" book, and it is the way to learn about the past. Happy Birthday, to the great Studs Terkel.

10. Absolutely!
In his writings, he lets everyday people add their voices to the American experience -- for that, he's a sly poet, in my book. A great Chicagoan, American, and wonderful man to hear ... hopefully for many more years.

7. Happy Birthday, Studs!
"Working" and "The "Good" War" are two of the best oral histories I've ever read.

11.  I love Studs Terkel!
Edited on Wed May-17-06 12:13 AM by Stephanie

I almost met him last fall. He was being interviewed in Grand Central by Brian Lehrer and I stopped to watch but I was too shy to say hello. I love old men! He is adorable. He is a true American hero.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Terkel! I am your fan.

12. Another fan here.
And I got to meet him at a staged play reading I was in, and once spoke with him on the phone about a benefit. Am I bragging? Of course I am. :-)

For two decades I listened to his radio program on WFMT. His voice was as familiar and welcome as my own grandfather's. Along with every other great thing he did on the air, he promoted the hell out of the arts.

He's written some kick-ass LTTE in the Chicago Tribune nailing BushCo with accuracy, skill and humor.

And then there are the books.

Happy Birthday to Studs, one of Chicago's greatest!
