Tell Nancy Pelosi Impeachment Is Good for Democrats
Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi has instructed the Democratic Caucus and promised the corporate media that the Democrats will not impeach Bush and Cheney even if they win a majority in Congress. Of course, such timidity is the most likely way for the Democrats to not win a majority in Congress. While 90% of Democrats and 81% of Independents disapprove of Bush in the latest Harris poll, only 67% of Republicans approve of him. Every poll done on impeachment (http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/polling ) shows very strong support among Democrats and weak opposition among Republicans. Moreover, an off-year election is won by inspiring your "base" to turn out in higher numbers, and nothing inspires Democratic voters like impeachment.

Here's an article about Pelosi's position:

Here's where you can send her your own thoughts:

and afterdowningstreet.com.

Just plain pissed me off. Its bad timing and inappropriate. We all know what needs to be done. This email was a waste of my bandwidth and disk space.

7. I feel differently, babylonsister
I think Congress has to do the hard work of investigations and get it all out there for the American people beforehand. We spent years on an impeachment that went nowhere. This one needs to be done right. Let's get the American people onboard.

11. I resent the fact that she thinks she can speak for all of us with this
message. Even if it's not doable until we have a majority, to totally discount the idea, given the reality of what's going on currently with this bunch of lying scum, seems just plain dumb to me.

4. 1) Yes, Pelosi is a coward and a fool for taking impeachment . . .
Edited on Sat May-13-06 06:45 PM by MrModerate
off the table.

2) Even so, we can't run on impeachment. We run on the "first hundred days" where we undo as much of the damage as possible -- moderate the tax cuts, get out of frakkin' Iraq so we can concentrate on the REAL anti-terrorist initiatives we should be undertaking, convince the rest of the world that Schimpanski doesn't talk for the US and will be hamstrung going forward, fix the Patriot Act, fix Medicare part D (and start the national debate on a rational provision of health care to our citizens), etc., etc.

3) And of course, there will be "accountability moments," since America deserves to know the truth -- too often concealed over the last 5 years -- about what its government is up to.

--But don't RUN on impeachment, because that will turn off people who disapprove of but don't hate Georgie and his cabal. Demonstrate that we can govern competently, even with an albatross in the White House.

13. We do not have to run on impeachment, but if we are not forcefully
pushing the need for solid thorough investigations into the high crimes and misdemeanors and treasonous acts and well as all of the betrayal and lies and the sabotage of our Constitution and treaties and basic values, then why the hell should anyone think that there isn't a dimes worth of difference between the parties. These are exceptional times and they call for exceptional acts of courage, not politics as usual. We cannot continue to enable and appease a megalomaniac dry drunk in his delusional quest for total power.

14. Exactly right, momcat - it's the INVESTIGATIONS
Congress has to take control of this situation and regain its role as a check on the Executive. It is the investigations that will provide the basis for any impeachment.

Pelosi denied Republican allegations that a Democratic House would move quickly to impeach President Bush. But, she said of the planned investigations, "You never know where it leads to."

This is exactly the right tack. It's the investigations which will justify any impeachment if they lead there. No shortcuts to this process. And certainly no reason to give the game away leading into an elections. I say, let the Republicans scream about impeachment and the Democrats say, "Who me?" all the way to November.

18. Right: To keep saying "We have some mighty important questions
that need to be answered and the American people have the right to know the answers. I just wish I heard that more often from more Democrats. John Conyers needs help and support.

15. Actually, I preferred it when there wasn't a dime's bit of difference--
At least they could govern the damn place then.

I don't see much courage in Washington these days. What I DO see is a burning need to yank the reins out of the hands of sociopaths so that regular, fallible politicians can have a chance to balance public and private needs in some reasonable way. This limited goal means that I'm willing to put up with a fair amount of spinelessness, even though I'm not happy about it.

19. Impeachment has to be off the table this year
it has no place in the dialogue about the direction of the country. Pelosi is 100% correct.

Now, if we take back Congress, then let's talk about impeachment. But just what are we going to do? Remove Bush and get President Cheney? Or remove Cheney and Bush and get president Hastert? No, leave 'em all there and let people see in the following 2 years why it would be best for America to have a Democratic congress and white house.

There also comes a point, as what happened with Clinton, that you could end up making Bush a martyr. The more they beat up Clinton, the higher his approval rating went.

Let's just wait, bide our time and send them all to the Hague to stand trial for war crimes in January '09. And if not then, remember the Nazi hunters tracked down and sent to trial war criminals for many, many years after 1945.

5. My letter to Nancy:
Of course you already know that Bush and Cheney are a terrible threat to American democracy, and new evidence of their major crimes emerges every day. But apparently you have decided to take a timid stance due to some misguided notion that impeachment is not politically popular. You are very very wrong. Impeachment will energize our base. The Republican base is demoralized and deserting their Fuehrer. They won't be turning up in large numbers at the polls this year, because they are ashamed to go out in public, thanks to the behavior of their corrupt GOP leadership. Our people need a reason to vote, a reason to believe that the country can be saved. Impeachment is the only way to save this country from ruin. Whether it's from Bush's insane plans to start a "Nookyuler" war with Iran (WWIII), his accelerating looting of the national treasury, his treasonous outing of a CIA operative, his vast political spying operations against the American people, or his destruction of our environment (or name any of a dozen other major crimes), Bush is a terrible danger to all of America and all of the planet. You have sworn to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. This means you are sworn to impeach the most dangerous enemy America has ever had: the Bush/Cheney regime. Just do it.

8. How does she propose to stop
Impeachment? If democrats take control they must fulfill thier oath to support and defend the constitution. This is directly related to Investigations already underway. The idea that she can stop the momentum (sorry Joe) is just not realistic. Don't worry about her soothing words for
Repubs this ball is already rolling and gathering speed. I don't believe Bush can remain pres even if we don't take control. Republicans would be wise to drop THE STONE before the election.

10. This explains why
the statement by Pelosi was unnecessarily bad politics. Just to have made the statement sends out signals to all groups that the Dems are weak on opposition, respond to bullying as if that had more legitimacy than law, truth or the people(who have no one other than the Democrats to look to). But on the surface this is waving the red flag about wildly while struggling to take it down and hide it. Impeachment is a strong issue and a critical remedy but the problem here is the also critically poor judgment of the mainstream(mainstream among the leadership only) Democratic officials.

This stems from decades of poor politics, poor advice, believing their enemies more than the facts, lack of confidence, untimely absolute faith in caution, fatal attachment to the same corporate ethos that is now clearly in the hands of renegades against the law. There are natural reasons in the closeness to Foggy bottom politics for our reps to believe it is the only game in town. That still is no excuse to be insulated from facts, from the uprising in public consciousness devoid of leadership and proper information, from the call of duty and the instinct for career survival. When your choice of action(or inaction) and words borders on the incredible and serves no good purpose other than to assuage felons you should be able, by the chameleon factor most politicians must have, to reevaluate your skills and choices.

Aside for impeachment- get a political brain and if you are going to lay low, do it smartly or not at all. If silence is golden then shut up. All you have to say in the wall of secrecy is that the wall first must come down for the nation to survive as a nation of laws and freedom. What more can you say anyway? If you are going to play the audience anyway then stick with the message.

12. Her announcement and Howard Dean's that Impeachment
is "off the table" is throwing in the towel. It's a response to the RW's threats. This is not how an Opposition Party garners power. America needs to clean out the trash-the Neo Fascists. Polosi is weak and should be replaced ASAP.

17. Bad politics yep, but imo shes beating down the tidal wave
before it can hit shore. If we say nothing, then we do what Kerry did when the swiftboat pricks started up bashing him. A swift decisive move may have stopped that storm front from becoming so huge. She knows they cant allow that to fester so shes nipping it early.

Better to be accused later, of going back on her word than allowing the freight train to wreck our chances come November.

16. My open letter to Nancy Pelosi
Edited on Sat May-13-06 07:00 PM by Prisoner_Number_Six
It's time you understand that you are living in a nation rapidly filling with very angry citizens. Your public and vocal indication that you will be willing to stay under the thumb of a group of criminals even after you win back the power to rid the country of them is a prime indication that you do not understand what the term "leadership role" entails.

As one of said group of very angry citizens, I feel compelled to inform you that if you remain disinclined to help remove George Bush and Dick Cheney from the Oval Office after the Democrats regain the majority in the upcoming elections, then we will feel inclined to remove YOU from office and replace you with a person of courage and integrity- someone who will understand what such words as Democracy and Freedom mean to the citizens of The United States of America.

We WILL win back our nation, either with you in your leadership role or with somebody else. At this juncture it's still your decision. Make it while you can- make it before you are fired as a Bush sycophant and a moral coward by We The People .
