Please contact your telecommunications provider regarding the NSA
Edited on Thu May-11-06 11:54 AM by AllieB
I cross-posted this in GD Politics also.

I just spoke with a very pleasant woman, who is the admin to the VP of Corporate Communications at Verizon. I was the first call that she received on the subject. You want to contact the Corporate Communications or Public Relations departments of AT&T (now headquartered in San Antonio), Verizon, BellSouth, and whatever telco or cellular provider you use. These departments are the outward/consumer facing organizations, and they will probably be forced to make a statement defending their actions.

Here is the contact info of Verizon's VP of Corp Comms and Public Policy, Tom Tauke:

(212) 395-1034

Let them know that you're outraged-politely, of course. :-)

More:

Selim Bingol, VP Corp Comms, AT&T/SBC: (210)821-4105

Jeff Battcher, VP Corp Comms, BellSouth: (404) 249-2000

More names:

SVP Corporate Communications, Bill White, Sprint/Nextel: (913) 794-1108

Corporate Communications, Director, Consumer Communications, Sprint/Nextel: Kelly Campana (630) 875-5122

Corporate Communications, Director, Public Affairs, Sprint/Nextel: Leigh Horner (919) 465-3712

1. Bellsouth called today to offer me an upgrade on services - I let the
young man know that I wasn't interested, and that I was actively shopping for a different service provider - and to pass along to management that it was due to them handing over any info about me without a warrant to the gov't. He told me that he's been hearing that from many of his calls today - probably not a good day to be a telemarketer with Bellsouth.

4. Might be a dumb question - is Sprint included in this?
Their name isn't in the article and I'm clueless if another corp owns them.

5. I read a while ago that Sprint was included
I remember because we have Sprint too. We'd love to go to Vonage but we run a business from home and absolutely can't do without fax service -- real fax service -- which none of the VOIP providers can handle at this point.

But I'd love to hear alternatives if there are any.

6. We are on a small rural phone coop, and I was thinking back
to earlier in the year. We received a form to complete from them specifically asking us whether or not they could release our information to anyone or whether they should use it only for their internal records. We asked for privacy and I kinda chalked it up to marketing stuff. But now I wonder.

7. I tried to get a copy of Verizon's Privacy Policy to find out
what my rights were as a customer.

I was transferred to the above office, then to a NYC office.

They ended up saying that they are not commenting on the USA Today article and they took my information and told me that someone would contact me, and I had to look up Verizon's Privacy policy at the FCC.

WTF??

8. I just left a message with a Pat Kaline (sp) at the Verizon number
you posted. Thank you very much for providing it!

I very politely left a message expressing my outrage for their forwarding my records to the govt via the NSA and that they were in violation of my 4th Amendments right and what they were doing was totally unAmerican.

12. '[email protected] .... i sent email here this morning
Under Section 222 of the Communications Act, first passed in 1934, telephone companies are prohibited from giving out information regarding their customers' calling habits: whom a person calls, how often and what routes those calls take to reach their final destination. Inbound calls, as well as wireless calls, also are covered.

The financial penalties for violating Section 222, one of many privacy reinforcements that have been added to the law over the years, can be stiff. The Federal Communications Commission, the nation's top telecommunications regulatory agency, can levy fines of up to $130,000 per day per violation, with a cap of $1.325 million per violation. The FCC has no hard definition of "violation." In practice, that means a single "violation" could cover one customer or 1 million.

Due to the information we have received the last couple months and my unsatisfactory experience with the change over of sbc to at&t, i want you to tell me if my rights are being violated by your corporation. Let me clearly say, I do not grant permission for at&t or any other company to take my personal information and give it to the government. If you are, as a company, ignoring my rights as an American citizen, then I have an obligation and responsibility to not only lose you as a provider but look into further actions.

Sincerely,

XXXXX XXXX
Amarillo, Texas
