Isn't it Ionic? Air purifiers make smog
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12707280/

Here's how to create your own personal Stage 2 Smog Alert: Buy an indoor air purifier.

Using a popular process called ionization, the air cleaners can actually generate ozone levels in a room that exceed the worst smog days in Los Angeles, a new study finds.

The devices are popular in urban areas. They are touted as getting rid of dust, pollen and other airborne particles.

1. I bought some units from Surround Air last year..
if you have it on high level you can smell the ozone. On low level I don't smell anything. Of course the manufacturer claims everything is safe. Makes me wonder if I should get rid of them I have 3 units at home and one at work.

4. I'm sold after cleaning up around a unit
There is a lot of filth that "falls" around the
electrodes, as the "ions" drop dust particles or
whatever, that i get to wipe up instead of breathing it.
Its a fair amount of dust/dirt.

room they have very powerful ones that will chemically remove odors from the objects in the room. They are so strong though that it is hazardous to be in the room with them and they have warnings about it on the hardware. They use them for crime scene cleanup also.

"Ozone Shock treatments should be done in rooms when no people, animals, or even plants are present. To do this, an unoccupied zone should be established with no air infiltration; no leaks through ventilation systems, windows, or doors. Also, by sealing the area, you can be sure the shock treatment will be successful."

They literally sterilize the room.
