Question for Sirius listeners.
Could someone please explain to me why Lynn Samuels is on the air on a TalkLeft radio program?

I was in the car all day yesterday and listened to her show for too long. She trashed David Brock of MediaMatters.org.
She said that liberals had no right to ask CNN not to air Glen Beck. She spoke for an eternity about American Idol
and her subway encounter with a woman with a baby stroller on a subway. It was appalling in its negative take on
liberals in general. If this foul mouthed bitch is the best we can do for those two hours in the afternoon, then
we are in big trouble.

I wrote the station to let them know what I thought of her show and wrote her also.

What a waste of the airwaves.

1. She is a couch potato talk show host.
Sirius is is serious trouble with keeping it's Liberal audience accounts. They are going to loose me.

2. If this ignorant cow is the best voice for our side
for two hours in the afternoon - then they have lost me too.

It was astonishing.

Why can't they expand Thom Hartman's show to three hours instead of one?

3. You don't know how to spell L-O-S-E
and Lynn Samuels is the best show on Sirius Left outside of the Young Turks. She's great. No one else could hold court like that with no sidekicks or guests every day and keep it entertaining.

5. I like the Young Turks also.
And I am all for being entertained while discussing politics.
But yesterday she called David Brock a Nazi for holding the opinion that Brock should not have
called upon CNN to reconsider hiring a hate monger like Beck.

6. Young Turks are great, Thom Hartman is great and the rest
of the so called "liberal" line up is not worth listening to. and with AA giving SPRINGER a show it's almost as if liberal radio in this country is actually BEGGING for me to just plug in my mp3 player and forget about talk...

7. Sorry, I have no answer that's good enough
She is most definitely not the best Sirius can do. After all, Thom Hartman airs live during those two hours. Unless they're afraid of getting burned by AAR, I just can't understand why they don't air all three hours live.

In addition, they air Alex Bennett, who trashed Cindy Sheehan because she didn't go on his show and also seems more interested in DVD reviews (maybe so that he gets free DVDs from the studios) than promoting liberal causes. Instead of Bennett, they could air Stephanie Miller live, but of course, they don't. She gets delayed to the nighttime, beyond the appropriate time frame (with this logic, they'd ensure we still be watching Dave Garroway on the Today Show).

For morning drive, they offer Bill Press. He really makes me miss Dr. Rachel Maddow. I liked Press with Tucker Carlson on CNN's Spin Room, but simply has no talent for radio broadcasting. He also likes trashing Rita Cosby because of her voice, but considering his biggest distribution outlet also features the voice of Lynn Samuels, it smacks of either stupidity or hypocrisy.

Afternoon drive has Ed Schultz (also on XM, so no exclusivity appeal there), but he's rather controversial here. After Schultz is The Young Turks, who I actual like.

Once in a while, Sirius has Richard Bey as a sub for Samuels or Bennett. He's so much better than either.

All in all, Sirius has the resources to put together a really good liberal station. Why they fail to do so is beyond me.

9. Why they fail?
Edited on Wed May-10-06 11:31 AM by SoCalDem
because their focus is Stern/sports & music...

The "political" arena is an afterthought. They threw us a bone, but one without much meat.. the conservative talk phenomenon was built up over 35 years, so it still has a stranglehold on the milieu. I think I will drop sirius and give my gear to my son. I only ever listen in the car, and I rarely drive these days...and when I DO, Sirius seems to have little that interests me.

We will never achieve parity, because the "business model" is against us. We are the anti-corporate party, and Sirius is about as corporate as it gets (as are most other radio stations)..

Conservatives are their cheerleaders. It's not going to be easy to get consideration by the guys at the top for much programming that goes against their very existence.

Conservatives have also couched their "programming" as "commentary on "daily events"..or even "entertainment". They have been on top for so long now (number wise) that they are the "standard"... Liberal, progressive, or left-leaning program is now seen as avant-garde media with a small audience. We know that's not true, but 35 years of propaganda has worked its black magic.

11. With your logic, Jon Stewart and Keith Olbermann...
...would have been fired long ago.

Nope, sorry. Corporate is about making money, period. And if they can make money from liberals, so be it.

The problem is that the liberal audience demands much more quality than the average conservative audience. The conservative audience doesn't worry about difficult-to-find facts or hypocrisy. Just give them the bubble-headed bleached blonde.

This is what puzzles me about Sirius. Yeah, they have Stern and the NFL to put in the mass market, but they also have Cousin Brucie and the original MTV VJ's. Stuff like this shows they actually worry about the minutiae.

They actually have the talent for a good liberal station, but for whatever reason, they think they can program a liberal station like a conservative one.

13. With the exception of Young Turks, Talk Left sucks and may
drive me away from Sirius in the long run. Alex Bennett in the morning is the worst damn host EVER. I don't even think he's a liberal. He doesn't have a grasp on any of the issues and is generally dismissive of anyone who calls in with knowledge.

He sucks. So does his sidekick - who also works for Lynn Samuels. He's the absolute worst.
