Tell me what you come up with.

My fault for not getting it earlier. I watched the replay and was 1/2 asleep.

6. Okay, sure...
The fact that I don't see a connection means I'm on the right track? :shrug: :shrug:
Xultar, you and I are often on the same wavelength but you've lost me here. Maybe I should just leave this discussion to fans of the show.

I gotcha. I'm a 70s baby. I didn't even make that connection, but there may be some truth to it.

But the skate was Condi's -- I thought a reference to her always "skating" through

12. I don't think they meant us to derive the meaning. I think they gave
it to us. Condi is Tutti or Tootie.

I'm not closely familiar with the show either, but I also detect many different references in the "press secretary" piece.

Your explanation sounds pretty viable to me.

14. They were pretty straight forward with everything. I don't see why
they'd pick the skate reference to Condi to make a really obscure statement about her.

Pretty much she's the little black girl on skates that's phuckin phunny.

15. Tootie on skates to make her taller, per IMDB

Trivia for
"The Facts of Life" (1979)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078610/trivia

<snip>

Kim Fields was only nine years old when she started playing Tootie, who was supposed to be twelve. In an effort to make her appear taller (and older) her character was always in roller skates for the first year of the show.

<snip>

kinda makes it even funnier to me -- good catch Xultar

16. Agreed. I laughed without even knowing the Tutti deal.
The incongruity in the middle of his terror was enough to set me off.

It triggered a pratfall, which was well-done enough to get a laugh outta me.

The rest is icing on the layer cake.

Condi ice skated competively as a child.

21. it wasn't an ice skate?
I thought it was. :shrug:

If it was a roller blade, I'll say that they used it because it was handy. If it was an actual roller skate, then I guess you've got something because somebody would have had to go out of their way to find one these days.

Old school with the ice skating boot. Big ass white stopper @ the front toe.

23. well, then he was either calling her "Tootie"
or making fun of her 70's hair style.

I still don't get it. I'd say Condi is more like Blair than Tootie, even if Blair was the whitest white girl in Poughkeepsie.

Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 05:13 PM by xultar
out. I didn't change my style until mid 2005. I looked kute with the flip.

I'm thinking just a reference to Tootie. It is comedy and he's taking digs. Best not make it to complicated or people won't get the joke.

For comedy to be good people need to get it. You don't want them to assume or infer. You simply tell them and let them listen and laugh.
The worse thing for a comedian is to make shit to complicated and people don't get it. Just ask Dennis Miller.

I don't know which to be more embarrassed by -- the fact that I couldn't spell it without Google's handy "did you mean..." feature or that I knew the Facts of Life was set in Poughkeepsie WITHOUT googling!
