I liked watching Bush mocked, but there was a did-he-really-say-that aspect, too.

And it was strange to simultaneously watch Colbert whom I like talking to Bush whom I can't take.

7. amen....but he was performing in front of a GD CEMETERY
that audience was despicable

they didn't like what they were hearing at all. he was encroaching on their turf and telling the world what this junta is REALLY like

and they DID NOT CARE to hear that one little bit

some of that material was killer, and he never got more than a few titters

17. It was a performance so good it stunned the audience...
it was a blast furnace of realism in a time of political lies heaped high.

And it was doggedly funny. A masterpiece.

My jaw was dropping all the way, and I have to say, I've never seen such balls before. Never.

It'd be great if he replayed it on his show, but with a HUGE laugh track!

53. It had an Andy Kaufman quality to it
and I'm not a big fan of AK, but going on stage knowing that certain things will get no response (because people are afraid to laugh) and trying to make people uncomfortable.

My husband was arguing with me all night that he didn't want to sit home and watch CSPAN on a Saturday night..... now he's so grateful I made him watch!

38. It seemed the microphones were off for the audience.
In several audience shots, everybody was either laughing or had a big smile and chuckle, but there was silence. I'll bet it was louder in the room than on TV.

There were a few sour faces, of course. Bush and Laura chief among them. Man, they both looked pissed. I'll bet he's ranting around the White House tonight, saying that's the last time he'll go to that dinner, among other things.

They're used to laughing at stuff like the Bush impersonator -- but I betcha they've never been on a wild roller coaster ride like the wit of Stephen Colbert before.

44. To be fair:
The WHouse correspondence dinner has always spoofed the news from...well, the WHouse. What could anyone talk about but what Colbert did talk about? Lies, spies, war, indictments... This WHouse hasn't done anything but bring trouble and ruin to our nation. Are there any happy little bills making their way through congress, or how about a particularly poignant moment in foreign policy? Nada. Colbert's humor is close to the bone, but because he always presents it as something he agrees with, the barbs go deep. The idea of a WHouse spokesperson running from Helen Thomas who keeps asking "why did we go to war?" is a perfect symbol of our demented capitol.

What is more uncomfortable, more brain-ugly, is the image of a coke-head chortling, "No weapons under there."
