PREFABRICATED HOUSES

Living within four walls - fast

Ready-made homes rise above old reputation

By RYAN LaFONTAINE

BAY ST. LOUIS - The future of neighborhoods here could be prefabricated.

During a meeting this month of Gov. Haley Barbour's Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal, there was much talk of replacing the hundreds of destroyed homes in Bay St. Louis with ready-made houses.

"I think these homes will play a big part in rebuilding on the Coast," said Bill Dennis, the architect who leads the Bay's design team.

"There's just not going to be enough builders to do all the construction that needs to be done."

I understand the need for quick housing. I'm looking also. It just worries me even more come next hurricane season. Prefabs don't sound very sturdy. That said. Finding a freakin camper would work for me.

They ain't what they used to be! There are some amazing ones in development. This website has those and some that are available now. The companies are small though and I wonder if they could supply any significant number for the gulfcoast. I remember last summer when the Fla. panhandle got hit there was a poured concrete house that did really well. It was featured on CNN. They're cheap to build too.

2. Posted to KU.
When Doug and I were separated and functionally homeless, I lived in an old Airstream on my family's ranch. LOL! I was SO happy to have it and even got power to it, a phone line, a SEPTIC tank, a garden w/ drip irrigation.

It was really a piece of work.

And I lived there for two years, bugs, critters and all, pretty happily and healed up just fine.

If you need a freakin camper -- have you thought about Craigslist? The whole community seemed to be very active last time I checked.
