Anyone have dentures?
Serious question: Does anyone have dentures. Due to the nature of my Crohn's and the chemo I am getting a full upper plate next month. I have sooo many questions. Will the taste be different? Is there a gag reflex? Do they just pop out? How do I keep them in place....SOOO many questions

what can I expect, how long does it take to adjust? Will food taste bad? Does it taste like plastic always? Any and all experiences are welcomed.

I am a bit scared.

1. This room is slow, so it might take you awhile to get
answers in here.

If it helps, I have seen the same question addressed in the lounge. You might want to try there, but be careful how you word it. Be sure it does not sound like you are asking for medical advice.

P.S. I do not have dentures.

2. I don't have dentures but my husband does.

He has never complained about things tasting different or bad. He keeps his in all the time, only removing them to clean them. He sleeps with them in and is adamant about that. He says if you take them out for hours at a time you have to get used to them all over again.

My husband doesn't use anything to keep them in...they fit well. No gag reflex according to him.

PS When you have them made have them make them more natural looking. My husband's upper plate doesn't have all of the teeth the exact same length. The lateral incisors and canines are just a tad shorter than the central incisors. Nobody even knows he has them besides me because they look so natural. He has a lower partial and full upper.

3. My dad got full dentures in his mid 20s
thanks to a depression and world war that prevented him from seeking much dentistry.

The upper plate will gag you slightly for the first few days. Leave it in day and night during this time, removing it to clean and swish your surgical site with salt water. Once the area has healed, you'll be able to help the suction that keeps the plate in place with a little dental adhesive to prevent things like poppy seeds from getting between plate and gum.

AFAIK from friends and family who have had plates, food tastes better when their teeth aren't hurting all the time. You'll have to cut things like apples up before you eat them but you'll manage corn on the cob OK with the dental adhesive.
