Does anyone here have A1AD?
A1AD stands for alpha 1 anti-trypsin deficiency. It's caused by a genetic mutation of chromosome 14. There are two forms, moderate (PIMZ) and severe (PIZZ). I have the moderate form. For years I was diagnosed as having adult onset asthma. None of the asthma treatments ever worked for me. My doctors would always remark on how low my normal peak flow meter readings were -- the lowest they had ever seen of someone who wasn't having an asthma attack or symptoms.

I got a great allergy and asthma doctor last year who finally figured out what might be the problem. After a couple rounds of blood tests, it was confirmed I had A1AD. There is no cure for it, and it leads to emphysema and liver problems, especially for those who have the severe form.

Anyway, just looking for others who might have this deficiency. I'm maintaining pretty well right now, but it never hurts to find others to share common health issues with.

1. Well, I guess that's a 'no'.
33 views and no responses. Guess I'll try my luck with google to see if there are any support groups for A1AD.

3. It's listed in the National Organization for Rare Disorders database
So I guess so. I also have another rare disorder, called Meralgia Paresthetica. It's really just an annoyance, though, as it only affects one area of my leg, making it numb when I stand or walk for long. The A1AD is much more serious.
