i have been advised to apply for social security disability, i lost my hand, have a back injury,
2 bad disks and maybe my aspergers syndrome may count some.

does any body know what is required and involved...

i have aspergers syndrome, i am a high functioning autistic, the thought of dealing with this totally freaks me out.. the gov always treats you like a criminal.

i dont do stress well..i am a mechanical savant, my clerical skills are in the 7%%.. i have an iQ of 164 but a reading level of 6 th grade.

i might get a security guards job, but after the surgery we have a lot of debt

1. get someone to do it for you if you can.
there are lawyers that specialize in this stuff. they might be worth it to you. from my experience with this type of thing, lawyers in this kind of practice are generous sorts, and going in for a consultation is worth the time. they will give you a good idea of what the process is, and what kind of help they offer. even if you can't hire them, you will know they are there. that will help.
if you can possible afford help, i think it is a good investment. after all, ever month that goes by with no check is sure money lost. \
good luck. it is a sucky experience according to everyone i know who has been through it.

2. Go to this web site and

follow the instructions to the t. If you have a hard time doing it yourself get a trusted friend or family member to help. You can do a lot of it on-line and by mail. That might be easier for you and less stressful. From what I understand from talking to people that work for SSA is that most denials are because something is not filled out correctly by either the applicant or medical people. SSA employees should treat you with respect and be helpful. If by chance you come across one that doesn't, get their name, write it down and then ask to speak to a supervisor. Work you way up the chain if you have to. If you should happen to get denied, keep all paper work and appeal.

BTW SSA employees can and do get fired for treating applicants badly. They should always be reported if they fail to do their jobs. Most bad press comes from those that never applied or didn't follow through. Remember, you paid into it (or not in the case of SSI which is based on need and income) and they are they to help you.
