Did American Idol hurt the cable news channels last night? FNC, CNN, and MSNBC have been heaping hours of coverage on the Fox reality hit -- and Tuesday's ratings suggest that viewers decided to watch Taylor and Katharine sing it out for #1.

At 8pm, the hour Idol aired on Fox, Bill O'Reilly was down about 20 percent from the day before (and his April average), and Paula Zahn averaged a measly 385,000, down more than 20 percent. (For some reason, Keith Olbermann didn't move an inch.) By 9pm, Idol was over, but it was still a soft night for cable news. H&C averaged 1,127,000 viewers, compared to an average of 1,562,000 in April (and 1,666,000 the night before). Joe Scarborough -- who has covered the Idol craze extensively -- averaged 230,000, compared to 326,000 in April and 331,000 the night before. (He had just 58,000 in the demo.) Other ratings notes:

May I venture a guess, here? Well-educated people watch Keith and probably, as a general rule, really don't like American Idle (no offense to any KOEBers who DO watch the show - there are, of course, exceptions to this general rule! :loveya: )

75. Of course
and I admit my weakness freely. I love the show in the beginning of the season, and then I get bored. Especially this year when it could only have been one of four or five contestants. At the end, I just wait for the result. :)

In fact, this week I get my life back: 24 and AI end. Yay!

59. He's so damn stubborn
Afraid he might learn something and have to take some action if he sees it. If he doesn't see it, it doesn't exist and there's no global warming. Simple, isn't it?

58. Is anyone really surprised to learn that * would just as soon not
trouble himself by dealing with inconvenient truths???

Poor Gore. Until Americans turn the volume down on their love affair with the automobile, all his good work will probably come to naught.

70. Doesn't matter.
It would be over his head, anyway.

About all he could say about it is, "Lookit the purty pictures of that melting ice-whacha-ma-callit on that mountain thingie."

74. I still get pissed watching his actions though
the mule sound then a full slack jawed grin followed by a stutter then a silence then a no.

that 6 seconds showed the real bush.

73. Did he say Oakland County?
That's my county, but I thought this happened in Grand Rapids -- on the west side of the state.

81. It was an Oakland County deputy
who was in another county.

Wow! I'm glad the driver is going to be okay & I hope they find the one who caused it!

77. Speaking of Fords and crashes
My pretty new car almost got bumped today. I stopped behind a woman turning left and the girl behind me stopped, but the guy behind her didn't. He rear-ended her so hard, she nearly hit my car (and would have had I not been watching the whole thing in my rearview mirror so that I knew to swerve into the emergency lane).

:applause: to Ford for apparently some fantastic safety features in the cab of that SUV.

82. I know I can't prove it, but damn, that looked deliberate.
Maybe it was just someone drunk or someone who lost control or something.

But MAN. :scared:

100. I think they just jerked into the next lane without looking.
Not sure why they changed lanes so suddenly, though -- could it be an inexperienced driver?

That poor woman. She must have been terrified. Lucky a cop was right behind her.

New suggestion to all people who do other stuff while driving: Please try to just drive, willya?

merging onto the highway from the right. But there is no excuse for not stopping.
