Well, I just watched the Colbert bit on the replay.
So Dana Milbank thinks he wasn't funny... who cares?

And I don't see that KO even offered his own opinion. I totally do not understand all of the kerfuffle about it.

And I'm not entirely sure that Colbert *was* all that funny -- I didn't laugh out loud much myself -- BUT -- I think he was totally consistent with his character. And I think that THAT is why it wasn't that funny. I think that somehow it's different when Colbert is on his own show making these quips vs. when he's right there in front of the president sounding like an over the top right wing lunatic-- it's NOT funny anymore, it's so damn edgy that the reaction is more like "ooooo!" rather than laughter. And I for one think that's kind of cool!

Jeez, now I want a cucumber martini. That sounds FABOO.

1. Did I ever tell you that you are my Fav?

Colbert was great .... he went well beyond humor and called that S.O.B. an S.O.B. to his face.

"And Scott McClellen is retiring to spend more time w/ Andy Card's kids." In other words
McCellen is the guy .... "

3. It was from Stephan Colbert bit in front of White House Press Event
You see the story is that Scott McCellen is gay and that he was Jeff Gannon's
back door into the White House. Scott got married PDQ when the Gannon
story came out. Colbert was dogging Scott for being a closet case and that
being is important because of all the "gay bashing" done by the repugs.

You have to get out more .....

10. Because Andy Card retired too.
Never mind, just relax and try not to think too much.

Drown your senses and overwhelm your emotions

4. Agreed. Colbert's style IS so edgy, the response is more "Shock & Awe"
Edited on Tue May-02-06 09:30 AM by zann725
...the "oooo" you referred to.

The fact that SC stood less two about 20 feet from the Prez, and said ALL that he did, with the direct "truthiness" (as SC would say) that he did...is something NO ONE else has had the cahunas (sp?) to do. THAT took courage...in the presence of the "King" to state with MANY factual examples, that the "Emporor Has No Clothes"...was bitingly satiric. And satire is so darn serious, the reaction is NOT to laugh out loud, but to drop one's jaw, sit nervously...awaiting the "powerful" target of the satire to burst into furor. All these news people knew (as SC referred to in his joke about the centerpieces with their mikes connected to NAS spies)...KNEW they (and their reactions) were being filmed from all angles. To be caught guffawing at a joke such as "the thing I like about Shrub is that he's the same man on Monday as he is on Wednesday... regardless of what happened on Tuesday." Or the joke about "taking care of" the pre-arranged Tuesday-night guest on SC's upcoming show, to "make-room" for Shrub. That kind of dark humor, that kind of truth...with it's sharp, sharp edge IS needed to cut through the layers and layers of lies and reverse-"reality" that this Admin. perpetuates so well.

Colbert WAS the "man for the job," and I give him enormous credit for the courage to comedic rapid-fire joke aim at Truth. The very definition of Democracy as defined repeatedly by Kerry is: "Telling Truth to Authority." Colbert obviously took that quite seriously.

And having trained as a playwright myself, I've been trained well to "listen" to audience response...even the silent, breath-held responses of shock-and-awe.

Colbert had EXACTLY the right tone, was exactly the right man for the job. Most of us (as children) are told early on that our fesces has an odor. Some privileged individuals go a whole life insulated from that truth. As a world leader, that flaw is Tragic... in epic proportions...as History has repeatedly told.

I do NOT understand why KO found SC's humor-tone too direct and "much." KO's best journalism is his comic (often "biting"/snarky) observations of the Truth (that most journalists don't discuss or even "cover). And KO's had more than his fair share of aiming sarcasm at Shrub's errors....like every night he repeatedly refers to "days since Mission Accomplished" first announced.

Diffference is: KO never said it all 20 feet near Shrub, for about 20 minutes, with comically rapid-fire jokes. Cahuna-envy perhaps? Much as I journalistically admire KO, in THIS case, me thinks he "protesteth a bit too much."

5. I think the word is "cojones."
Not that I speak Spanish or anything, but I think Colbert did have cojones, and that Jon Stewart said as much.

8. being funny wasn't the point
it's true that Colbert got up and did the sort of stuff he does every night on Colbert Report that has 'em rolling in the aisles. All of a sudden, when * is in the room and we're reminded that all the bad things are real and not joke fodder, it's not so funny anymore? Or is it just that the attendees were uncomfortable because they realize it's far past time for a grown-up to stand up and say, "Enough!"?

Yeah, the "Bush twins" skit got the media attention the next day -- not because it was funnier but because it was safer to talk about. I'd rather get my laughs from a comedian and my truth from the president, but when I'm not getting truth from the president, this comedian will certainly do.

11. I thought it was shock-and-awe funny,
and I now don't think Keith expressed any specific opinion of it at all...and no, I don't think he's envious, or lacking in any courage, either. That is observers projecting their own opinions onto him.

13. actually, the satire was as biting and funny as usual
but people felt that it wasn't safe to laugh once * stopped smiling. Says a lot about the current state of things, now doesn't it?

14. Last night, Stephen played his "audition tape" on the show....
and the audience was howling with laughter!

I think Jon said it best: "He was under the impression that he was hired to do what he does on his show every night."

15. hubby's been on the road
he got home last night just as The Colbert Report was starting. Although he'd seen a few clips from Saturday night, he hadn't seen any from the audition tape. He laughed his head off, which was my initial response to it, too. Those people at the press dinner... crickets. I don't know if they were too offended to laugh or too afraid to laugh or a bit of both. I only hope they get over being affronted long enough to step back from the situation and re-evaluate the non-value of access journalism to our democracy.
