Meanwhile, in other areas of DU, people are bitching and moaning because Obama has granted temporary asylum to illegal Haitians here, AND the Red Cross is talking about bring some people from Haiti to Florida.

After World War II there were a whole lot of Europeans with no place to go. We took them in. Of course people ostracized them and called them "dirty DPs"...some. But I didn't think that kind of behavior was characteristic of the values of DU.

Leave these poor people alone. This is not the time for that argument. They're already discriminated against because they don't have the benefit of the wet foot/dry foot policy the Cuban refugees do. Cubans have the right to stay with or without a visa as long as they make it to dry land because they have stronger Congressional lobbies. The Haitians, who take as treacherous a journey, from a more impoverished country, are immediately returned to Haiti with no chance to stay. One of the worst double standards ever.
