I hope none of you is planning on saying anything negative about George Carlin.
Because, while in the eyes of DU, Tim Russert was lower than a piece of shit, well, as far as they're concerned, a true saint has now died.

And, of course, they're bitching, whining and grousing about how his death isn't going to get near the tribute Russert's did (as if Carlin would want it). And making all kinds of comparisons between the two men, because of course, comparing people one on one and making judgments as to which one was a "better person" makes perfect sense.

And, of course, he passes the DU Ideological Purity Test with flying colors:

1. Was he politically aligned with us? Check.
2. Did he hate religion as much as we do? Check.
3. Did he entertain us? Check.
4. Did he do lots of drugs? Check.

In short, the man was perfect. And you better not say one word against him.

1. My first thought when I woke up to the news he had died
was "Hmmmm, I wonder how much attention this will get and how many Carlin threads will there be on DU."

2. I was surprised to hear he had died
I remember reading the "7 Dirty Words" case in school. I agree with Carlin: there is an off switch to your radio & your TV. Don't like what's on? Change the channel or turn it off.

3. I just have to jump in here and say I heard one of the words on TV yesterday.
Watching "Legally Blonde" on Comedy Central, the manicurist says to Elle, "Why? What's she got that you don't got? Three tits?"

:)

4. I swear that the only reason the USSC took that case
was so the justices could argue over who got to write the footnote that had all the words in it.

5. I posted today in LBN a new poll that 90% of Americans are religious --
I tend to think in terms of politics and not religion, and had in mind as I posted that the poll is a reminder that we Dems have to deal with religious folks as voters. I even included in the excerpt a few lines about religion re. political persuasion. Was there one response in that area of thought? I don't think so. The poll is wrong, right-wing propaganda, etc. People lie to pollsters. People are stupid, but I as an atheist am not, etc.

These are all legitimate responses, but they remind me yet again of what an infinitesimal piece of Americana we represent here. Which, back to my original point, is why it's hard for us on our side to win elections, and why, if we at DU -- God bless us -- ran campaigns, I don't think we would never win one!

6. I'm really disgusted with the posts I've seen today.
Not with the ones that stuck to praising Carlin. He was great--I didn't necessarily agree with all his views, but he had a brilliant and open mind and he was damn funny. My problem is with the numerous and lengthy threads comparing Carlin to Russert, deliberately so that people would have yet another excuse for pissing on Russert's grave by acting like he was the son of Satan and couldn't hold a candle to Carlin.

I've come to the conclusion that there are a lot of people on DU with about a mental age of seven. If that.
