I have to go back on Thursday & Friday. OMG, you guys should see the CPS compound & the set-up out there. CPS was very "gracious" & has allowed the mothers & children 15 minute phone calls today. I guess there was enough bitching in the media about attorney access to clients. I was describing the situation to someone & she said "You know this sounds rather, um, German." Draw your own conclusions from that....

and went ahead & said all the ones they could tell were under 18 just by looking at them (no shit--that's the actual testimony) were actually under 18, including one 27 year old who has a birth certificate & drivers license. :nuke:

What a fine mess that must be. Dear dear.

You know what I find ironic? OK, I haven't been able to watch Big Love, but remember how Keith was supposedly on an episode in which Countdown supposedly featured a story based on their situation? Well, the irony is, here we have this big FLDS story all over the news...and Countdown has not touched it AT ALL.

the situation keeps changing & no one knows what the State is going to do next.

Here's a blog that is pretty good at following the story: http://blogs.sltrib.com/plurallife/

The Salt Lake Tribune has had some really good articles as well.

Not that I would wear one. But there are at least 3 different patterns that I've noticed & the women all wear their hair differently.

Just so's ya know, there are people out there who are alerting on anyone voicing any kind of support for the FLDS crowd. Apparently, insisting that the State follow its own laws & the US Constitution are grounds for banning on DU. :eyes:

of the world. As soon as she's the candidate, which is what they want, they'll grind her up for her agenda. Hillary's laughing at Keef's questions was bordering on the insulting. I guess she never watched his program before, she didn't know he was going to ask real questions intelligently.

Hillary gets the phone call, and hears whatever, and just starts cackling. Never mind, an SNL skit maybe, not any decent person's anti-Hillary commercial. That means of course that in the slim chance that Hillary is the nominee, McCain can run that commercial against her.

Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 07:33 PM by BerryBush
I know, that will sound sexist too, but it's true.

If Keith knew anything about women, he'd know that one of women's favorite stalling tactics when they don't know how to answer a question is to laugh! Giggle or cackle, either way!

Of course, men do it as a stalling tactic, too...but they tend to do it as a deep chuckle, which makes them sound knowing even as they're casting about desperately for an answer.

Women are usually more transparent. We giggle airily ("Oh, what a silly question to ask! You can't be serious!") or we cackle ("Too funny! Please, don't make me laugh!") while we try to figure out what to say.

It was really a tell with Hillary that she was doing that. Nervous laughter indeed.

65. ::timid little voice::
I thought it was a good interview, but he should have followed up on the nuclear Armageddon scenario. Scary.

Note, I still like Hillary. I respect what she's done in many, many areas. But I'm leaning even harder toward Obama after that interview.

I liked that he didn't try to berate her, though. That would have just made me mad, and less likely to judge her words on their own. He let her do herself in, and was respectful throughout...

which I fully expected from KO, despite what GDP thinks.

I have nothing against Hillary, except when she cackles when she should be answering instead. :)

and if he says something he believes was wrong will come back on and apologize for it. It was a pretty good set of questions and you're very right about being able to judge her on the merit of her answers.

93. Keith was not a happy man with Hillary tonight.
He was essentially asking her: "Why was it that when MY principles felt so compromised by what I felt I was doing to YOU that I couldn't live with it and I left my job, yet when YOU were faced with the decision of whether to shut up and make nice with a person who was your sworn enemy and who I hated because of what he was doing to you...YOU chose to kiss and make up with him?"

And she was LAUGHING.

I think that quite literally hurt him. I'm not kidding.

I think he really felt lost and betrayed.

119. That laughing was the second worst thing in the interview
The first being the "promise" of a nuclear response if Iran conducted a nuclear attack on Israel.

Yes, it was, in a sense, a "freebie" because I don't think anybody really thinks that Iran is anywhere close to being able to carry out a nuclear attack. But it squicked me, because there are other unstable countries (::cough::Pakistan::cough::) who do have that ability.

It was pandering to Israel, and it was pandering to war-mongers, and I didn't like it one little bit.

128. Exactly. Iran isn't anywhere near having a nuke and she knows it.
But she's gotta rattle the damn saber because she thinks she will persuade the undecideds that she's hawkish enough and not wimpy like other Dems. And, of course, wave the pro-Israel flag, playing pander bear to the Jewish vote.

story, don't know the history. Would it be worth my time to come up with a timeline of his comments about the candidates and how it matched their actions? Or should I just let it go, because those who are so horrible will never see it the way it is?

(PS are you going to take this observation to GDP?)

If the Countdown threads are still active, maybe. But any thing that sounds sympathetic to Hillary there gets swarmed, and I won't bash her just to "get along."

I've been very saddened by her campaign. But she has spent literaly years fighting for causes I believe in, and I refuse to join in with the "she's evil" crowd.

120. No, he frequently bashes her
I don't mean criticizing her actions or policies--many of which are worthy of criticism, and I often agree with him. But I mean outright, meanspirited bashing. And when he does that, I just get mad at him instead of paying any attention to the point he's trying to make. I was afraid he'd be snarky with her tonight, but he's too classy for that. That's why I say it was a good interview. He let US see for OURSELVES, instead of trying to mock or ridicule "us" (the audience) into disliking her.

131. Well, you know I disagree with you.
I have not seen any meanspiritedness from him. Snark, yes. But snark is not always meanspirited. I grew up in a VERY snarky family, and snark is how we show affection. Outsiders are sometimes shocked and can't believe we spend so much time "insulting" each other. But it's not meanspirited insulting, it's snark. I am gathering Keith's family was much like this, and it is just how he expresses himself, and you're misinterpreting him.

Here's an example. Keith says that when he was a kid he was a total failure at all sports, including his favorite, baseball--he was a totally klutzy Little League dropout. About this, his parents said (according to him): "Son, it's not important whether you win or lose--what's important is that nobody knows you're our son."

I'm sure that to some people, this would make them sound like the cruelest parents in the world. But I have a feeling that by the time they said it to him, he knew it was not meant sincerely, but was just their affectionate snark.

I can't think of a single interview in which I have ever felt Keith was trying to do anything but let us see his subject as he or she is. No mockery, no ridicule. He sits back and lets the answers to the questions tell the story.

134. You're right about the interviews
Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 08:59 PM by bain_sidhe
He's always respectful, and I should have known he'd be the same with her.

But, by the "meanspirited"... well, of course right now I can't come up with any off the top of my head. I don't dwell on it, after all. But it's mostly been in those "leading questions" he sometimes does with his "correspondents" (not "guests," but his regulars like Wolfe and Robinson) where he puts the spin in before the interviewee gets to answer the question. I remember a couple of times just feeling incensed at the way he put the question, and not even hearing the answer.

See, the thing is, I'm not one of those who cry SEXISM! everytime somebody criticizes Hillary. But I feel very personally pleased that a woman has gotten this far in the presidential campaign. So, especially if I feel the criticism is unfair, or the coverage is biased, I do feel a personal "sting" about it. I try to keep a level head about it all, because, after all, I think Obama would have a better chance in the general election. But. Still. It's there.

**edit: I KNEW that word looked wrong!**

109. Hardly at all.
I did end up with some swelling in my left wrist, and on the left side of my neck, and both of us were sore as hell, but we came out of it all right overall.

Believe it or not, the car was still driveable. Happened on Christmas Eve 2001 on our way down to Oregon to see my family. Made it the rest of the way down and back home (getting many funny looks on the way). It cost over $8000 to repair, but the shop I took it to did top notch work.
