White House vs. Freshman Dem Congressmembers on War Supp'l Bill
Edited on Sat Jun-13-09 11:19 AM by clear eye
Who represents our party?

Netroots peace organizations have been calling on their members to ask their Congressional representatives to oppose the ~$105B "War Supplemental" bill, which also would give ~$6B to the IMF (Int'l Monetary Fund). All Republicans have committed to voting against it, most likely just to be ornery as they don't have a history of peace or anti-IMF votes. Apparently that means if 39 Democratic Congressmembers defect, it won't pass.

According to FireDogLake's last count 32 are poised to vote no, and 15 more are leaning that way. The White House is upset, and it's been alleged to be playing hardball w/ the freshmen Dems. According to this article in the Huffington Post, "Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) said {that someone from the White House is telling freshmen Dems,} 'We're not going to help you. You'll never hear from us again,'" if they don't vote for the supplemental.

Pelosi has delayed the vote, apparently because of the shakiness of their numbers. She appears to believe that it is a temporary problem that the usual whip activities of horsetrading and strongarming will solve, but Kucinich is actively working in the opposite direction.

According to TheHill.com, Pelosi has "cobbled together a majority" for the upcoming vote by holding healthcare and climate change bills hostage to passing the war supplemental. http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/106b-war-bill-moves-forward-in-both-houses-2009-06-11.html
