a few of my paintings
can be seen here --> http://radfringe.tripod.com/bluestonestudio/

I started doing watercolors after a 10 years "hiatus" -- use to do oils/acrylics. After the 10-year "hiatus" I felt the need to start painting again and decided to try my hand at watercolors.

This morning, after my partner leaves for work, I have a new painting to finish up and get wrapped as a gift....

2. style changed? yes and no
I tend to get tooooo "tight" and heavy handed with the watercolors -- trying to use them as I would oils/acrylics and dragging in my mechanical drafting training

My partner wants to stand over me with a bat while I paint -- when I get too heavy/tight she wants to give me a whack in the head.. lol

I'm trying to use impressionists, such as Monet, as a model to loosen up my technique -- sometimes I succeed sometimes I don't

My subject matter has changed -- I'm not striving for that "artsy - mainstream gallery" subjects. I just paint what I like for whatever reasons. If other people like it -- then all the better, but I don't choose a subject just because it's the "latest thing"

I also try to work faster -- this keeps the "tightness" toned down. It's all personal taste and preferences.

3. working fast is hard isn't it ?
it's kind of like music=it's the notes you don't play.I have the same problem wishing I could paint from my soul instead of my head.

4. working fast
actually helps me because I don't get bogged down with "details" and makes the piece looser.

If I work slow, my focus is on the little details -- loose or tight technique depends on what I'm trying to paint and how I want it to look when done

because of my drafting background -- when I work too tight, the "whole" of the painting can suffer because I'm focused on little things and not the entire subject. Sort of not seeing for forest for the trees

6. I have a heavy hand
maybe too heavy to use watercolors...

but what the heck -- as far as I know there is no LAW that says I can't use watercolors like I would use oils or acrylics...
