7. Damn, something raided the nest over night...
...the babies are all gone and no parents in sight! I thought they were pretty safe but you never know -- it was either a Cooper's hawk or rats. The nest was perfect and so clean -- each time a parent would feed the kids they would take the poop out. I'm heartbroken...nature is so brutish and unforgiving. I think I'll stick with horses!

I don't know the western bluebird, but the eastern variety is my favorite bird! Love them, they are real little sweethearts.

6. I Love them too!
This is the first time we've even seen more than a fleeting glance of them on our property. I have a feeling you'll be seeing more of my "family portraits" along the way! The male is stunning. They both work so hard at keeping the family fed.

So we are raising another barn owl family down at the barn and trying desperately to keep the swallows from building nests under the eaves! Between the birds, the rattlesnakes, and field mice, I feel like I'm living in the outback!
