Beautiful decay, Nome style
Almost the entire town of Nome is a study in beautiful decay. It is one of the oldest towns in Alaska, having been in its heyday during the first gold rush in the early 1900s. About 5,000 people live in Nome today, but at one time it was a bustling city of 30,000 gold seekers and other characters. The town has a great history, complete with a saloon once owned by Wyatt Earp.

I'm still working on my Iditarod shots for the gallery, but here are a few shots of beautiful Nome decay for you guys.

3. It was so windy that day
I couldn't even open the car door, so I had to shoot this through the windshield. We did walk back over to the cemetery the next day and I got more shots, but they aren't nearly as evocative.

We rented a car for one day only - the most windy day of all, it turned out - and drove as far as we could on every road out of Nome (which wasn't very far because of drifting snow and no road maintenance). We've been told that in the summer you can drive about 350 miles total in the area in and around the town, so now we're thinking of a summer trip. They say it's very beautiful up there in the summer, with lots of wildflowers and migrating birds, not to mention beachcombing along the Bering Sea shore for Native and gold-rush artifacts.

Love to see what you'd bring back from a summer excursion there.
