Not worthy
A couple of pics I thought weren't worthy at the time. (In the last couple days I been trying a new lense that has been trying me - so I've looked at some of old stuff to get me thru the learning curve)

and that lense that's busting my chops can do this out my back window... (This is just about the only thing I've done with it that's passable)

1. Forgive me . . .
. . . if I'm mis-understanding you. But are you calling the above pictures "unworthy"? Personally I'd call them stunning. The only critique, and it's a minor one, would be that my eyes were looking for the rest of the shadow of the tree on the far right on the second picture. But beautiful. The first one is totally gorgeous. Where were they taken?

5. You have to understand...
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 08:25 PM by regnaD kciN
...mtt44sc has different standards from us mere mortals. (And, no, that's not a joke. Look back at last year's contest results: mtt44sc won five monthly and seasonal contests -- which was as many as anyone else had won up until that time, over four-plus years of DU photo contests -- and did it in a span of only eight months. That's amazing by anyone's measure.)

2. Those are fabulous!
Geez, if those aren't worthy, let's see some that are! They must be out of this world!

3. I'd like to see the rest of your "not worthy" pictures.
Something tells me they're all pretty impressive.

4. i would so like to comment, esp. on the first one being far out of this world already,
just like it is, but I can't use the word "stunned".

With a prohibition like that I am left with my mouth hanging open and eyes like fried eggs, and the mark on my forehead can't be named, because it was a "stunning" that made it happen when my right hand went out of control.

It also very much makes me long to know just where in SC I would go to find this landscape. I'm nearby, and I know how to travel.

Now: all word play aside.
When I first came to this country, in my late teens, forever ago, I fell in love with what I have always lovingly called "shit on trees".
It's Karmic, I'm sure. And I get overwhelmed with images of the deep South wherever this is depicted, and quite frankly, have never found photos on that subject that touch me like yours.
I've looked at them, I have !

That's why I simply have nothing to say about your photos.

6. I don't know what to say...
Thank you all. Its a lake about 3 miles South of Georgetown in an area called Bell Isle. There is a bit of a famed Civil war site close by called Batter White. Here is a google map, Do stop by! Right at sunrise is a good time on occasion!

http://batterywhite.org/location/

I live close where you see that little cove (my side yard and where the first pic was taken) near the L in the mis-labeled Tranquility Lane (Its really Mallard Circle)

The first three at the link below are the ones I chose to post at Flickr that day. I hadn't even really looked at the first one above.

The second one I had looked at - but chose to post this one instead

9. THANKS, for taking me seriously. And I will tell you one day, in the springtime,
about having taken a trip to follow that trail.
I Guarantee you I will bring back photos for my own consumption only, but will have relished the experience.
:)

10. mth, I'm always fascinated by the way you can make that scene
different every time. I try to do that down on the Coastal Trail, but after a while it seems like all my shots look the same and I get bored with it. How do you make these sparkle every time?

12. Piping up once more ! I understand
what you are saying, because, though different subject matters, there are things in my house (I work from it, so I don't get out much) that intrigue me over and over again.
They may be how the afternoon light hits a certain spot in my kitchen, or hallway, or the morning light on a piece of artwork in the living room.

I have photos of the same basic arrangemts from any given recent year.
Glass balls, 2001.
Glass balls, back door, 2004.
etc. etc.

they are all beautiful, yours and mine, to you and me, and yours to everybody.

:)

14. I love ther third one
the best. It's a departure from your usual awesome shots. I love the monotone feel of it. Almost, but not quite black and white. Very very cool. (Notice I did not say stunning)

beautiful shots but I have a question that no one else seems to have. How, and why are you fighting with that lens?

17. Manual focus
the Auto focus can be pretty slow. And I'm just not seeing things well enough at the larger focal lengths to focus with any consistancy.

18. Oh now I
understand, only too well. My eyes have gotten to where it is hard to even think about trying manual. Two tricks I have learned. One, if it is a manual focus only lens try taking it to where it is really really blurry then bring it back in focus. Go with where you feel it is sharpest first off. Kind of like test taking, more often than not your first answer is the right one. The taking to all the way to completely out of focus help reset you eyes and brain. The one I am using more often now is to find something to use the auto focus on and once it is in focus then switch it to manual. That only helps if you know where you need that focus to be a head of time. I use that method a lot on the hummingbirds at the feeder. They can kill a battery with the auto focus on a camera with all their flitting around.

19. Thanks for the tips
When I first got the macro lense I had similar issues - but have - over time gotten a better handle on that.

I suspect with this lense I may have to employ a monopod or tripod more often given its weight - it can be an armload to hold steady.

20. A big lens huh?
I'm jealous. :) Tripods are good though seems like a few think they are a pain. It isn't that hard to get in the habit of keeping one with the camera equipment and can be a shot saver.

21. Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM
Kind of a different animal - at least to me - its about the size of a EF 70-200mm f/2,8L IS USM. A bit heavier - but to reach 400 its slides outward and which point it can become a "handful" :-)

A couple of pics here

22. Try the tripod.
You might find it isn't that much extra to carry around or work with once you get in the habit. Specially if you just keep the quick release on your camera all the time. Now if you are taking long hikes it might make a big difference weight and bulk wise.
Nice lens and having the IS makes a big difference between good and bad handheld pictures. Can't wait to see what you find to do close ups of with all the swamp and natural beauties around you.
