Poll question: Poll: Please help choose an exhibit submission.
Edited on Sun Jan-11-09 06:20 PM by Tindalos
I just received notice that the photography course I took last year is having an exhibit of our work. The university has offered gallery space to hang some of our pictures. Space is limited because there are several classes involved. We can only submit one picture and they will choose the ones they want to show. So, there is no guarantee I'll be accepted. I'm the worst judge of my own work, so please help me decide what to send. Below what I think are my best/favourite pictures.

Please vote for the one you like best. Also comments as to why you did (or didn't) choose photos would be extremely helpful.

1. Rainy Day

2.Ueno Koen

3. Shichi-go-san Festival

4. The Daibutsu

5. Restart

6. Other.
To cover other options like "None of the above", "Don't quit your day job", or to suggest something else.

Thanks.
~Tin

1. Tough choice ! I predict "you will be chosen"to hang.
After a few times studying I chose the girl because catching her in mid stride gives it so much momentum. A gentle action shot. The half face shown and the body of the older woman all complete a sense of the happening.

My second is "Restart" but don't ask me why. The picture is not one to be understood by me, I can only surmise what's going on and would probably be wrong.
But I'm allowed to really like it.

The third is the Daibutsu, because of the children, specifically the sitting boy. A rare catch, and it doesn't look posed.

The other two are simply beautiful. But don't have your personality in there so much, others could have done them, if you know what I mean.
The bird takes my breath away.

Thanks for letting me look.

8. I think you're right about "you will be chosen".
I have no idea which one to choose. I keep changing my mind. I'm not sure whether to go for something more classic like Ueno or something more personal. Ueno seems to be leading for now. We'll see, I guess.

Thanks for the feedback, Mira. It's really helpful to know what other people think.

2. I'm going with Ueno Koen.
Classic, calm, beautiful and well composed.
Second choice - Rainy Day - Evocative

Restart - Needs something to define it - good color.
Daibatsu - would be magnitudes better if you could get rid of the three people in the foreground.
Shichi-go-san Festival - There's a really good photo there struggling to get out. Way too many distracting elements. Get rid of the two people coming down the steps and the stuff off to the right side leaving the little girl and her dad in the black suit.

9. Thanks,

I agree with your critiques. Restart bothers me for exactly the reasons you name. I love the colour, but it lacks something. Otoh, I kind of like the undefined quality of it, which is why I threw it in. I can see what you are saying about the other pictures too. It's very helpful to have these things pointed out as I know very little about composition. Thank you for your help.

12. I gave that one to my mum for Christmas.
She thought the pigeon was adorable. She didn't discuss composition or depth though. I need DU to point these things out to me.

Thanks. :hi:

WOnderful composition filled with contrasts - light/dark, hard edge/curves. I like the perspective, there's good depth captured in the shot. The shot being ever so slightly off center gives a nice edge to the compostion.

I like Rainy Day but would crop out the right hand out of focus bird.

7. I could change the cropping.
I wasn't sure whether to leave that bird in or not. I'll see how it looks cropped differently.

They haven't decided on size yet. I think it depends on the number of submissions and space available. I may have to change it anyway depending on what they decide.

21. Not so sure I think cropping it out would benefit.
If you crop you are going to have to sacrifice some of the rainy part. And part of the charm of that picture is that they have "all" sought refuge from the weather. You might loose some of the information that makes the picture really work.

I tried fiddling with it, and I could not find a crop that worked better than the one you have now. In my opinion, of course.

6. Everyone is being very helpful.
Thank you for the comments. I agree with all of them, even the ones that contradict each other. Lol, these are the kinds of arguments I'm having in my head.

The submission deadline is about a week, so I'll leave this up for a while. I'll check back later.

Thanks.

10. Hi Tindalos!
My first choice is Shichi-go-san Festival...I like the motion, the contract in color that draws your eye to the girl, and that there is a story here, something to wonder about.

Second choice is Rainy Day. It feels warm and comforting to me, that's the feeling I get from it. It's also just a nicely done shot, with the plastic in the background making the little safe spot for the birds.

Good luck! :hi:

11. Hi SpookyCat!
:hi:

Trust me, there was nothing warm about that day. It was miserably wet. Those pigeons had found the one dry spot in town, and they weren't about to give it up. I felt bad disturbing them. They didn't fly away though - too comfortable, I guess.

The girl was a lucky shot. I just turned around and snapped the photo. Pure luck.

13. I couldn't vote for the same reasons you have a hard time choosing.
I know my monitor loses a lot of shades of color and B&W, so it is hard to pick wisely, but I just wanted to give a double thumbs up for zero-voted "The Daibutsu." At first glance it just looks like a picture of a statue, but like all great photos, a second look reveals a bit more than the first. The next look is the foreground visitor, whose appearance echoes the statues, and the third, the kid on the first step, whose tranquility and pureness echo the meaning of the Buddha. And then the whole thing, with the pure blue sky, says something about the whole and says it well.

I might submit it as an act of conscience, but I doubt the judges would see it as I do. I do believe it is one of those photos that invites another look, and then another, and rewards each look with a deeper appreciation of what "The Great Buddha" is intended to convey.

As for the others, I'm probably useless, but "1. Rainy Day" would be my last choice - just some wet birds with no compositional hoo-hah's, "2.Ueno Koen" might be my first, other than the above, if my monitor showed a bit more subtleties in the gray's, and "3. Shichi-go-san Festival" is pleasing visually, but evokes no particular response or meaning. "5. Restart" might be my vote bu for the fact that a lot of the "art" of the composition is done by the graffiti artists and that might count against you in the eyes of the judges. My view is that your ability to capture the whole is what makes it #1 among the rest of them shows your talent. But as for predicting judges, I have no clue, and what I see as a plus might be seen by them as a minus.

20. Have you tried converting Rainy Day to b&w?
Edited on Sat Jan-17-09 07:05 PM by dbmk
Don't know if thats "allowed", but the colours does not seem important in that shot and especially the red claws might distract from the situational aspect which is the main focus of the image.

If done I think I would pick that. Otherwise its Ueno Koen for me. The light in that one is very special. The shot is very sharp, but the light seems fantastically soft.

22. Hi there, I chose #3 Festival pic
1. I like the angle of the photo
2. Love the colors of the girl's dress in contrast to the crowd
3. Her foot coming off the step as she ascends is just cool!

Second choice would be #2 Boids
Just like the composition out of focus background and the way the bird is hesitantly noticing you.

GOOD LUCK!! Let us know what happens. :hi:
