Kerry interns need your help, MA Kerrycrats!
Edited on Fri Feb-17-06 05:13 PM by Vektor
I just spoke to WEL, and as you all know, we have a pretty cool gig coming up this summer.

Well, I have managed to find some pretty great housing possibilities, one of which is a lovely two bedroom apartment RIGHT IN BEACON HILL for an incredibly excellent price.

The only problem is, it is unfurnished.

I really like this place, but to not want to subject my roomie to my idea of minimalism. :-)

Do any of you have any furniture items cluttering up your homes and garages that we can borrow for the Summer? I will pay gas to transport the items, and a stipend to rent or borrow them if need be. Just say the word.

I would be happy with buying a futon for myself from Ikea and sticking it in my bedroom.

Does anyone have to lend any of the following:

Bed (any size)
Dresser
Night stand(s)
Coffee Table
Chairs/Couch/Love seat, or anything like it...
Any other "furniture-y" type things that might be of use...

I am also willing to buy a few items, and share, WEL.

This apartment looks WONDERFUL and is really well priced. The only thing that could use some help is the decor. There is none!

Thanks, guys.

Edited to add, as we finalize our apt. selections, would it be possible for either Tay, Rox or Whome to take a peek at the place(s) for us sometime? We can't really see them until we move in, but I trust you guys' judgment if the place is decent or not. So far, we have three or four Beacon Hill possibilities and one Back Bay. We'll narrow it down to one or two and have you take a look, and maybe a photo or two for us, if you are willing. No pressure, just if you are in the city and are able.

1. Are you transporting anything?
I was thinking of visiting my uncle in Redding anyway, I might could bring some stuff down if you're planning on a UHaul to Boston. Let's see what everybody else comes up with.

My gosh how exciting. See how life just flips right around?? :bounce:

2. I hadn't thought of that....
...but depending on what you have, maybe I could ship it. We are flying there and maybe shipping a few of our things out to Boston. Smaller items might be doable.

5. We'll see as we go
You might also check Craig's List, and lots of cities have a free column in their newspapers. Maybe some of the Boston crew could keep an eye out and store some stuff between now and then too. We'll get you set up, one way or the other!!

it would be to ship it - shipping is damn expensive these days.

Then when you leave you can sell it back and at least get some of your money back.

then return when we leave, if possible.

3. Congrats to both of you!
Check for places that rent furniture as well, companies like that are in all the major cities.

4. Thanks - I will look into that too!
I guess maybe a "rent-a-center" type place would do the trick, huh?

6. Hopefully you won't have to go that route...
With some luck the MA Kerrycrats will have some stuff stashed you can borrow.

When does this all happen? What months will you be there?

7. There is some flexibility...
...due to our schooling. It will be a summer gig, roughly late May to mid August, give or take a week or so. WEL and I have slightly different times when our semesters start and end, but they said that would be ok.

Any chance you might be out that way this summer? You are a native too, right?

10. I might be... I hope
Not sure yet, but it's been a while and I have a niece in ME who has been asking us to come for a visit. If I do come out it will most likely be mid to end of June and I will spend 6 - 7 days with about half of the time in ME, as my niece in in the last coastal town on the Canadian border and it's a trek to get up there. That leaves me one day or so for the hometown of Newburyport, one day for the old friends and one day for Beantown if I can plan it right!

I'll keep you posted, I'd love to finally meet you and the MA Kerrycrats.

11. There are some reunions
and meet-ups in the infancy stages of planning. Should be a "wicked good time."

Where is Newburyport? I grew up in the beautiful town of Westport, which I love dearly. I am planning a trip there too, while I am out there.

We are trying to plan something, but right now it is only in the "Hey, wouldn't it be fun to do this..." stage...

But we will definitely let everyone know!

"hey, wouldn't it be fun ..." It snowballed pretty quickly and eventually turned into beer and internships! When we put our minds to it, stuff happens.

Edited on Fri Feb-17-06 06:12 PM by nolies32fouettes
if WEL was driving down she could pick it up.

Also, if you're on a shoestring, you could go garage sale(ing) too. (I love garage sale shopping and antiqueing!)

But if nothing pans out locally, there is always the possibility of shipping. Thank you so much for offering...

I like the idea of garage sales too.

13. Have you heard of Freecycle?
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecycleboston/

Maybe a Boston area Kerrycrat would want to join anyway, and then keep an eye out for stuff you guys could use.

It's so fun. I got a new garbage disposal from it! I have a bunch of stuff to put in it, waiting for a spring cleaning. :)

Great idea!

21. I'll see what I have
We're pretty spare with furniture, but I definitely have a coffee table you can use, and I have some very nice curtains if you need some. We do have a loveseat that's going to be available, but I wouldn't want to insult you with that thing. We bought it at the Salvation Army for 25 bucks until we had the money for a new couch. The thing is pretty ratty-looking, so if anybody else has something nicer - come forth!
I have a lot of deco items, such as framed prints (if you like Dali), but that's really one of the last things you will need - once all your essentials are squared away.
Other than that, I'll check for you, and see what else I can come up with :-)

24. Let me see what I can do.
I have a friend dumping stuff because she is moving to Arizona in May. I can snag bookcases and a couch.

I will put out a call to my 29 bazillion relatives in the area and see if we can come up with 2 decent beds (and mattress sets.) Hmmm, then you need a fridge, right? Hmmm, my brother runs the rental for microfridges in Boston for area colleges. I might be able to snag a couple as summer rentals. These are not fancy, but they are real useful as they ae a small fridge, microwave combo. Ahm, I can probably get you some basic chairs, nothing fancy, and a breakfast table set up.

Will you need bedding, like sheets and stuff? (My mother lives for this stuff. She will go insane asking all her condo buddies to pitch in.)

Now, about getting this stuff to Beacon Hill. That is what we call a headache. (One way streets that are, ahm, somewhat narrow. It is nearly impossible to park anywhere and not get towed and a lot of buildings have no elevators and everyone, but everyone lives on the 4th floor. And none of the furniture fits, cuz the buildings were all built when everyone was 5'2" tall and you have to take stuff in through the bay window. Sigh! This happened to my brother when he furnished his place in the Back Bay. They took the damn window out and hoisted stuff up with a pulley system. And Beacon Hill is worse.)

Let me work up some e-mails to my family and see what I can come up with. One brother recently sold a second home at the Lakes in NH and he probably has excess stuff hanging around. And there is always the BU bro, he sells furnishings to college kids. It can probably be done. I will, of course, need some dates so I can firm this up before the summer. Then I have to get some promises from these people to actually show up. (I will promise them beer. That usually works.)

Let me see what I can do.

I am actually in negotiations to rent a fully furnished two bedroom for a little cheaper, that is slightly outside the neighborhood. It is in the Fenway area, and a short jaunt on the green line. We still may need a few things, but not as much as we had thought.

You by the way, are the sweetest and nicest person EVER.

The one thing I may need from you, once we finalize if you have no objections, is to see if yourself or Diane or Rox could go take a look at the place and just let me know if it is decent. The neighborhood and area both look decent (I "Google Earthed" it) and the gal is going to send me some pics soon.

We may have found a winner, and if it is possible, I'd have one of you locals spec it out for me. No pressure, just if you can. You can then take a look about and see if there is anything that we might need that they don't already have.

Tay, you are an angel - always willing to help a friend (or two). WE LOVE YOU.

26. Oh, this would ave been easy.
I have this huge family in the area and this type of thing has come up before. No problemo, my dear. I like helping, it makes me feel good and temporarily assuages my Catholic guilt.

The Fenway area is nice. You are near BU and Fenway Park and are, indeed, a short 'T' ride from 'the office.' That area is nice and very convenient. (There are supermarkets and stores in the area. Life will be good!)

27. There should be quite a few summer sublets available
College students who want to keep their apartments while they go home for the summer will often sublet them for 3 months. And many of those will be somewhat furnished.
