Kerry Says Citizens Need to Pressure Lawmakers for Voting Reforms
10 April 2005

Speaking today at a Faneuil Hall event sponsored by the Massachusetts League of Women Voters, John Kerry “told a crowd of about 100 in Boston on Sunday that all citizens must demand their right to vote and refuse to be intimidated.”

Kerry, who is using crutches as he recovers from knee surgery, said too many voters who tried to cast ballots in last November's presidential election were rebuffed. He said people must push for changes to make sure all voters are treated equally.

"Last year too many people were denied their right to vote, too many who tried to vote were intimidated," Kerry said. "There is no magic wand. No one person is going to stand up and suddenly say it's going to change tomorrow. You have to do that."

Supporters of Kerry have said voting irregularities in a largely Democratic areas made it harder for voters to cast ballots.

1. so John Kerry did show up ?
TayTay said she was going to this event even after the change in plans where Teresa would fill in since Kerry had an event with Marty Meehan around the same time. i'm assuming he probably has or will show up at both events based on this.

can't wait to hear what TayTay has to say, and i really hope she got pics.

13. These changes will need to be made on a local and state level.
That is probably the only way there will be any improvement by 2008.

Maybe he wants the magic wand? or just wants to bitch because it wasn't changed in 2001? How very productive.

19. I'll take you up on that, JK...
I got you 250+ pages of reforms. It's not to do with voter suppression, but e-vote and e-tabulation security, something else that your campaign was concerned about in OH post-election last year.

Now please look at them.

...OK, I'm not pissed off. Really I'm not. I know he's incredibly busy.

But hey, he's a lawmaker, so that call for action applies to him too. :D

26. BTW, have I told you guys that I really appreciate you?
Your good wishes in this thread were wonderful I am touched. I did indeed have a wonderful day. I thought the Senator was not going to show and I would instead be treated to a speech from the Lovely and Talented Teresa Heinz Kerry. But she was the one who canceled and her husband graciously filled in.

OF course, this being Boston and all, it was full of funny moments. There was a guy manning the info desk in the market below the Hall who told me to get my ass upstairs and go hear Kerry speak. The old gent told me that as these were Democrats I could expect to be treated to fivers, ($5) inducements to watch the speech. Ah Boston.
