Bolton nomination in deep trouble
GOP senator may oppose UN choice
By Farah Stockman, Globe Staff | April 6, 2005

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2005/04/06/gop_senator_may_oppose_un_choice/

Hourahan said that 110 people contacted Chafee's Washington office on Monday alone, most of whom said they had received an e-mail from the office of Senator John F. Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, about the Bolton nomination.

Debbie Rich, a Chafee spokesman in Providence, said that fewer calls had come into the Providence office, but that ''most of the calls that are coming in are about Bolton, and the majority of the calls that are coming in are against his nomination."

Hourahan estimated that in Rhode Island 40 percent of voters are registered Democrats, 50 percent are independent, and 10 percent are Republicans. Over the years, Chafee has often gone against the grain of his party.

Boy, does this ever feel good. Let's have some love for the Rhode Island Dems on the e-mail list. You folks rock.

1. wow, only 10 percent are registered Republican ?
that seems really low. even in very right wing states i think the Democratic minority has a larger registration percentage than that.

now i know where to go if i want to get away from as many of them as possible.

3. If this has not hit DU GD or P can someone write it up?
I have to be away for awhile and this is a great, great thing. The e-mail list might just supply the impetus for denying Bolton the Bastard that UN Ambassadorship.

WooHoo!

8. It is on the greatest page and hopefully will get some more attention
and more calls.

People need to keep calling the undecideds and the ones wavering.

4. Wow! What a Kerry victory if he votes against Bolton
Do you think there's a chance to get a second Republican?

Do you think that Lugar might break with the Bush administration on this? It sounded in what you posted on the Iran Contra stuff, the Lugar was semi-supportive of Kerry's investigation.

Coleman's from a blue state - do you think he might be getting pressure as well?

7. Coleman is the ultimate whore
He won't vote for anything good unless he's sure Minnesota would hate him forever. I doubt this is one of those issues he thinks people will care enough about. Maybe if Minnesotans deluged his offices... but still, I don't see Coleman taking our side.

9. RI and Chaffee are both AWESOME.
Last fall, I loved learning that afer sitting down with Cheney and some other G.O.P. leaders, finding out what their plans were for the second term and freaking, Chaffee made the decision not to vote for Bush in 2004. So what if he wrote in Bush Sr, instead? For me, it was the thought that counted--especially the announcing said thought to members of the press.
