Russia retakes Georgian village near South Ossetia

By MATT SIEGEL – 43 minutes ago

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Russian troops retook a village near the breakaway region of South Ossetia Saturday just hours after withdrawing, Georgia's Interior Ministry and European Union peace observers said.

The move drew criticism from Georgia, the EU and U.S. Senator John Kerry, who was on a half-day visit to Tbilisi.

1. Thanks for this, GV. This is so scary. The Senator...
...is right in the middle of things, as usual. I'm glad for that...I just hope he stays safe.

2. My first thought was
Yikes! Get out of there, JK. My second was thank God he's there.

I guess I'm with you.

4. Yes. Thank God he is there...
...and he cares about getting this right. He is the BEST of America...and the world needs to see that side of us right now.

That's also what keeps this group together, IMO ...despite our debates on various issues we care about. We all get what has to be done...and are heartened that JK is fighting the fight.

7. Dangerous, but it's good to know JK is safe and able to comment on the situation

Kerry: Georgia must not be sacrificed for dialogue with Russia

TBILISI. Dec 13 (Interfax) - U.S. Sen. John Kerry, who
unsuccessfully ran for president in 2004 as a Democratic candidate, on
Saturday said the United States needs a dialogue with Russia but not at
the cost of Georgia's interests and urged Russia to fully meet its
commitments under the French-brokered plan for settling August's
conflict in Georgia.
Kerry, who was speaking at Tbilisi airport at the end of a visit to
Georgia, also said Georgia needs U.S. support in defending its
sovereignty and seeking to bring South Ossetia and Abkhazia back under
its control, and promised to put a proposal for help to Georgia before
the Senate.
Kerry also praised Georgia's democratic achievements but insisted
that the country change its election system.
He declined to comment on demands by the Georgian opposition for
early parliamentary and presidential elections.
At a meeting with Kerry, Georgian opposition leaders had called for
early parliamentary and presidential elections in their country. The
leader of Georgia's Republican Party, David Usupashvili, said he had
"traced understanding of this position" on Kerry's part.
