Do you use an accountant/bookkeeping service
or are you do-it-yourself, like I am? I'm a math teacher with a master's degree in mathematics but I still don't feel like I'm completely comfortable doing our books, and since my husband is a cost-plus remodeling contractor, we keep track of everything because we provide all our homeowners with copies of the receipts/invoices and itemized expenses.

I use Quickbooks and I pretty much have it down now but occasionally, discrepancies will come up and I just sort of try this and try that until it seems to be balanced. I can only imagine what a CPA would think of our books, though!

And I absolutely HATE doing the income taxes, though I do use TurboTax. I just know I'm doing something wrong, even though we've never been audited in 28 years of being in business. Every year I think I should call an accountant but I'm too cheap and it's usually too late! ;)

1. I have to use a CPA for my year-end stuff in order to keep our
contractor's license. I do our day to day accounting and payroll with Quickbooks too. I really need some training b/c I know very little about accounting. It drives me crazy, but I make it.

Our accountant doesn't complain too much but charges entirely too much in my opinion. It cost $1800 last year for him to do our business tax returns and a balance sheet for the contractor's licensing board.

He didn't have Quick Books at that time, so I still had to print everything out for him. This year, he has Quick Books so I'm hoping I can just make him an accountant's copy and let him work with that. I'm hoping that will make it a little cheaper.

2. We have an accountant and a
bookkeeper who comes in and does the difficult stuff every three months or so. I used to do all of our taxes but I feel more assured with professionals. I think I could do without the accountant but not the bookkeeper. I just can't figure out some of it. I also use Quickbooks and I use their payroll service. I'm mostly satisfied with their service.

3. I hire out. I can't stand doing that stuff and plus
it's a write off so why bother?

4. My POS sytem does a lot of it for me.
But I farm out the taxes to an accountant. I can't imagine trying to figure out all of the deductions, etc.

I use Quickbooks Online (I don't have the ability to back up my entire system etc.) and we use an accountant for the EOY taxes.
