Sigh. I work with people who just cannot comprehend...
Tonight the server that I work with started talking about a woman who called him to get him to go back to church. He said he went. I said good for you. He said, "What? You don't go to church?" I said not since I was forced to as a kid. "Well why?" I don't believe in god.

"Geez, Will, you GOTTA believe in god!"

There you go you atheist heathens. You need to believe in god because you gotta!

1. Worse is the smug indulgence that follows
Because you'll inevitably "come around" one day. For now, you're just a contrarian brat, like a kid who won't brush his teeth until a toothache gives him a dose of reality.

2. Many, many years ago I was sitting in the break room of my place of employment.
At another table, two women were discussing religion & God. One woman said, "Since 95% of the people on the planet believe in God, it's only logical to assume that God exists."

:wtf:

I had to get up & leave the room or I would have caused a scene.

4. I constantly get people claiming that I must be a Nihilist because of my Atheism.
The fact that I look "odd" and sometimes "creepy" because of my Autism (and thus do not have soul according to Jenny McCarthy) doesn't help matters.

6. “Don't worry. They're Nihilists; they can't hurt you.”
Sometimes the stupid just hurts.

8. "Ya gotta save Xianity! Ya just gotta!"
I had to think for a while (being a freshman geezer), but I just KNEW that line in your OP reminded me of some bad old movie: "You GOTTA believe in god!"

I finally remembered it: "The Crusades." Where that annoying Bible-thumper (Catholic Division) Loretta Young emotes for the ages.

But the real story is even better than I remembered it:

David Niven: When she was young, Loretta Young was pretty. That, not her talent, got her cast in film after film.

Cecil B. DeMille told me the story of his directing her in "The Crusades."

She was doing a scene, urging Richard the Lion-hearted to go to the Middle East and fight...Loretta read her line: "Richard, you gotta save Christianity!" But not very convincingly.

So DeMille took her aside and asked her to put some awe into her line reading. They reshot the scene, and she said, "Aw, Richard, you gotta save Christianity!"

Niven's right. That's exactly the way she delivers the line and it's a real hoot.

Long as I'm here, Young's smug self-righteousness often pissed off Bette Davis.

Once at a party, Davis was about to sit down. She glanced at her chair and said: "Look, Loretta Young sat in this chair! The sign of the cross is still in the seat!"

Another story says Davis was on the set of the "Loretta Young Show" once and said "Damn." Young told Davis that swearing was not allowed on her set. And furthermore, Davis would have to put a quarter in Young's "Swear Box."

Davis allegedly said: "Here's ten bucks, Loretta. Now fuck off."
