Virtual worlds offer real-world healing

SAN FRANCISCO - Do virtual-reality worlds such as Second Life have healing powers?

We're not just talking about video-game "hit points" here — but about real-life maladies ranging from cerebral palsy to post-traumatic stress.

The evidence is still tentative, but experts on virtual worlds as well as health care say they see a lot of promise in virtual worlds as a forum for addressing real-world woes in a kinder, gentler environment....cont'd

Actually I'm for ANYthing that works, and it's different for each person. However, I can't imagine there is any replacement for REAL person-to-person counseling/therapy and support. I'd hate for this virtual world to be the recipient of funding while hospital clinics and medical facilities are all closed down. And I'd hate for it to become the magic bullet, replacing REALworld solutions and hands on work. I can just see all psych-related and brain damaged soldiers shuffled off to a room full of computer screens...

6. On a slightly positive note
the Louisiana congressional delegation is working to bring a VA hospital back to New Orleans. Katrina messed things up for the city's hospitals. The plan is for the VA and the LSU Medical Center to share facilities. It should become a reality if the politicians stop dicking around.
