Slain combat controller to be buried Saturday
Staff report
Posted : Thursday Feb 26, 2009 12:00:22 EST

Funeral services are set for Saturday to honor an Air Force combat controller killed in Afghanistan on Feb. 20.

Staff Sgt. Timothy P. Davis, 28, of the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, Hurlburt Field, Fla., and two Army sergeants died after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device, which was followed by small-arms fire, military officials said. The soldiers were Staff Sgt. Jeremy E. Bessa and Master Sgt. David L. Hurt of 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, at Fort Bragg, N.C.

This was Davis’ second deployment as a JTAC to Afghanistan.

“Tim was one of the first squadron members to volunteer for this recent deployment, despite just getting back from one less than a year ago,” said Maj. Travis Woodworth, acting commander of the 23rd. “He was the epitome of the quiet professional that we in the special operations community strive to be.”

Davis enlisted in 1999 and initially served as a survival, evasion, resistance and escape instructor. He switched to the combat control career field in June 2003. After more than two years of training, he reported to the 23rd.
