Single Soldiers Have New Housing Option
Single Soldiers Have New Housing Option

FORT STEWART, Ga. — The clear blue water sparkled invitingly.

But the heated pool remained untouched, surrounded by the noise of construction that still marks most of Marne Point, the newest housing development at Fort Stewart.

Under the awning of the community clubhouse, caterers scrambled to set up cheese trays and snacks for a post-ribbon-cutting gathering while, outside, front-end loaders rumbled around, drowning out the noise of hammers and saws.

Staff Sgt. Phil Latham isn’t going to complain about the construction noise.

As one of the first residents in Marne Point, the single, non-commissioned officer with the 4th Brigade Combat Team’s 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry is happy to have an on-post housing option.

1. Co-ed units too. I hope they figured in all the pregnancies that will occur. nt

2. Young people have sex. It has ever been thus.
When I was in the Navy there were a lot of pregnancies among single sailors (often leading to hasty marriages) but the problem wasn't that the genders weren't separated enough. It was lack of use of contraception coupled with the fact that many people saw how much better your standard of living would be if you had a dependent. You got a house on base or an allowance to rent a place. You got dependent pay and com-rats (extra money for food). Single enlisted are treated like recalcitrant teenagers, no matter how old they are or what rank they hold. You get stuck on the ship or in the barracks. Your quarters are regularly inspected for cleanliness (married housing, OTOH, is not and believe you me I saw some pigsties) and your visitors are limited. When I was on shore duty in Japan they made everyone show ID to the front desk before entering the barracks. They were so committed to preventing unauthorized sex in enlisted quarters that someone came up with the genius idea of chaining all the fire exits shut! That's right. For a while, before some of complained, there was a single exit for a building with 4 floors and several hundred residents in the event of a fire. I applaud what they are doing in the OP and I seriously doubt it will lead to an increase in pregnancies. If anything, the opposite might happen.
