Wainwright soldier dies 8 days after attack

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A soldier from Fort Wainwright has died of combat injuries received in Iraq.

The military identified the soldier as Pfc. Cody J. Eggleston, 21, of Eugene, Ore., who was wounded during a mortar attack Oct. 16 in Baqubah. He died Friday at Bethesda Naval Medical Center in Maryland.

Eggleston joined the Army in July 2007. He is the second fatality in the Oct. 16 attack. Pfc. Heath Pickard of Texas died that day.

Eggleston was an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright.
