UIJEONGBU, South Korea — A 2nd Infantry Division soldier asked a Uijeongbu appeals court Friday to overturn his one-year jail sentence for assaulting a taxi driver.

Sgt. 1st Class Marlowe Davon Howard, 35, said he has apologized to the taxi driver and paid him a 2 million won ($1,397) settlement following his Sept. 3 conviction.

Howard, of the Division Special Troops Battalion, maintained that he did what he thought was best following a traffic accident with a taxi in Dongducheon in December.

An earlier court ruled that when the taxi driver got out of his car, Howard struck him and dragged him along for about 800 yards.

At the earlier trial, Howard said that the taxi struck his car and that the driver was not seriously injured when he attempted to stop Howard’s vehicle, according to court officials.
