ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Md. — A renovation of the medical hub at Andrews Air Force Base is helping give wounded warriors a better welcome as they return from war in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The recent $4.9 million renovation expands the medical facility by 45 beds to a 107-bed capacity. Previously, the crowded facility forced some patients to stay in a gymnasium.

About 100 soldiers who make their first stop in the U.S. each week at Andrews don’t stay for long. Those with the worst injuries are taken to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington or the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. Others stay at Andrews briefly before going to hospitals closer to their homes.

While soldiers are at Andrews, Maj. Gen. Gar Graham says they get a “first-class welcome” with recliners, root beer and filet mignon for dinner.
