FORT RILEY, Kan. — Some 3,900 soldiers at Fort Riley have received word that they will be leaving for duty in Iraq in October.

The 2nd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division, known as the Dagger Brigade, learned late Monday that it would be deploying for 12 months. The brigade has been training for the deployment for more than a year. The training included a rotation to the National Training Center in California earlier this year.

Nearly 3,000 Fort Riley soldiers are deployed in either Iraq or Afghanistan, including the combat aviation brigade. That unit is expected to return from Iraq this fall.

Additionally, more than 4,000 advisers who have been trained at Fort Riley are deployed. They’re helping the Iraqi and Afghan militaries.
