Airmen at Eielson mop up after housing floods

Dozens of airmen and their families at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, are still recovering after more than 65 base homes flooded Aug. 7.

Thunderstorms, coming on top of the area’s wettest July on record, filled some basements with up to 6 inches of water, according to a base news release.

The 7.3 inches of rain the Fairbanks area received last month is more than it typically receives in a year.

Housing maintenance workers helped families pump the water and remove damaged drywall and carpet, and base officials opened a dormitory’s laundry rooms so airmen and families could wash their soiled belongings.
