Midshipman gets 5 years in child porn case

Midshipman 1st Class Michael Pollard pleaded guilty to storing child pornography on his personal computer at his court-martial Tuesday at the Washington Navy Yard.

The 23-year-old Pollard pleaded guilty to two counts of Article 133 — conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman — for possessing pornography in Bancroft Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy and for making false statements to a Naval Criminal Investigative Service agent. He had faced up to 46 years in the brig.

He also pleaded guilty to three counts of Article 134 for possessing an external hard drive with about 680 images and video files of child pornography, for possession of a laptop computer containing about 385 images and video files of child pornography and for receiving about 680 images and video files of child pornography.

Pollard pleaded not guilty to one count of Article 80 for attempting to distribute child pornography and one count of Article 133 for wrongfully endeavoring to impede an investigation by installing the Windows Vista Home Premium operating system on his home computer, a process that can erase a hard drive’s contents. He also pleaded not guilty to possession of child pornography on a second laptop computer.

The prosecution agreed to drop all the charges to which Pollard pleaded not guilty.
