Guard training site prepares for expansion

PROVO, Utah — Camp Williams is expanding.

The National Guard training site 26 miles south of Salt Lake City will soon take on an extra 600 soldiers.

About 2,000 are stationed there now.

Col. Scot Olson, director of facilities and construction for the Utah National Guard, says the Guard is in the early stages of gaining more land for the base and planning new facilities to accommodate the growth. Right now, the camp includes about 28,000 acres of land owned by the Utah National Guard, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Olson says Camp Williams was selected for expansion because of local military recruiters’ success in signing up new soldiers and finding others to re-enlist.
