HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Authorities are reviewing security at an Alabama military base after a high-speed chase by civilian police ended in a fatal crash.

Maj. Gen. Jim Myles said Monday that officials at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville want to determine what happened during a chase that ended in the death of a NASA employee at the north Alabama base.

Huntsville police pursued a drug suspect on to Redstone Arsenal on May 30. The chase went about four miles across the post before ending in a crash that killed 39-year-old Darren Spurlock, who worked at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

Myles said security improvements are being planned at several arsenal gates over the next month. But he said those changes were in the works before the crash, which injured five people.
