Senior enlisted course may become permanent
Senior enlisted course may become permanent

For years, the Army, Navy and Air Force have offered professional military education for their most senior enlisted leaders, but Marines were left to learn on the job.

That may change, as the Corps considers making permanent this spring’s pilot course for senior enlisted Marines.

The five-week course at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., which ended April 10, brought together 20 sergeants major, master gunnery sergeants, first sergeants and master sergeants for an overview of how upper-level decisions are made and what future challenges might look like.

“All of the other schools — the staff sergeants course, the advanced course — we were being trained. In this case, we were being educated,” said Master Sgt. James Roberto, the operations chief for Support Company, Marine Special Operations Support Group.

While the pilot course welcomed sergeants major and master gunnery sergeants, the program may eventually be focused on first sergeants and master sergeants so Marines can develop these skills earlier in their careers.
