Convicted Kunsan rapist may be punished for disappearance

SEOUL — U.S. Air Force officials said Tuesday they may take “disciplinary actions” including a court-martial against the Kunsan Air Base flight surgeon who didn’t show up for his sentencing hearing after he was convicted of rape earlier this month.

Kunsan spokesman Master Sgt. Sean Houlihan said Monday that Air Force officials had decided not to charge Maj. Mark Seldes for not appearing at his sentencing.

On Tuesday, however, Houlihan stated in an e-mail response to Stripes’ questions that Seldes’ chain of command was considering appropriate actions, which may include court-martial.

Houlihan said he couldn’t release the charges or disciplinary actions Seldes might face because of privacy laws.

Seldes was convicted Jan. 31 of rape, adultery and conduct unbecoming to an officer and a gentleman for raping a civilian employee in her dorm room in November 2006 after she had taken a sleeping pill.
