ARLINGTON, Va. — Officials have a “high degree of confidence” that a missile destroyed the fuel tank of a satellite falling to Earth, Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright, vice chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, said Thursday.

But Cartwright cautioned it would take another 24 to 48 hours to make sure the missile hit the tank.

The satellite was launched two years ago but failed shortly after launch. It had been expected to fall to Earth early next month.

President Bush authorized the Defense Department to shoot it down to prevent the satellite’s toxic fuel from coming into contact with people.

On Wednesday, the USS Lake Erie fired a modified SM-3 missile that collided with the satellite at a combined velocity of 22,000 miles per hour, Cartwright told Pentagon reporters at a Thursday morning news briefing.
