Comments or helpful hints on purchasing a mobility scooter?
My dad needs one badly - any help or advice would be appreciated. Here are a few that I've looked at online:

http://www.mobilitydirect.com/scooters/Shoprider/scoot-shopr-main.htm

http://www.scooterville.net/BuzzAround.html

http://www.spinlife.com/critpath/spec.cfm?productID=69979

Thank you!!

1. I have a Pride Legend
same one endorsed by Evel Knievel :)

You need to carefully check each one that you are considering for weight requirements. Scooters die very early when they try to carry more weight...or even close to maximum. You need one that's rated for at least 50 to 75 lbs. more than your father weighs. Make sure that seats are adjustable.

I bought mine online from http://www.americanwheelchairs.com/scooters.shtml Price included shipping and a local firm to come set it up for me and show me how to use it.

If you're going to try to get Medicare and/or insurance to pay for it, I can tell you now that you'll have one hell of a time getting them to authorize it if you're able to get around on your own at all.

2. Thank you - you answered two major concerns....
First of all, my dad is a big man. He weighs about 295 and so I was looking at the ones with a weight capacity of 300. So, I really need to go one more level up - knowing that now rather than later is very helpful.

Also, the Medicare thing - I told my mom and dad that everyone I talked with rolled their eyes when I mentioned Medicare, as if that were a pie-in-the-sky dream and so if we can swing purchasing what he needs without them, not having the headache of dealing with them might be worth the cost! LOL You've enforced the opinion that I already had and I thank you.

We're new at this and learning as you go is not always the greatest!

Thanks so much for your reply and I will check out the website you posted.

3. I know how much having my scooter has meant to me.
Going shopping is still a pain in the ass because stores are being allowed to ignore the ADA and getting around is hard. But I can "walk" the dogs, I can go to the local store, I can get out in the park, I can attend rallies and 'marches' and before I had the scooter I really thought that the only way I would ever get out of the house again would be in a box.

4. They are nice....
I hope that we can find one suitable for my dad soon. It's hard to see him nearly immobile. Thank you so much for you help. And, I'm glad that you can get out and about - especially to those rallies and marches!! These days if the disabled don't make themselves seen and heard, they will be considered expendable by this administration. It makes me furious.
