Star Wars MMO will have space combat

If you’ve been following the news coming out of the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ panel at Comic-Con International, you’ve heard the announcement that we will indeed have Space Combat as part of the TOR experience! But what does that mean? Space combat is an alternative gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and ground-based combat. In space combat, you fly your personal ship to various “hot spots” on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars™ space battles.

How many DUers are planning to play the Star Wars MMO? I'd be happy to organize a group/guild for DUers and fellow travelers, as I did for Warhammer Online.

Shooting Imperial troops? Fun.
Bitching about RW politicians? More Fun.
Shooting Imperial troops while bitching about RW politicians? Maximum fun.

:D

1. I'm torn
on the one hand, hell yes. On the other, I don't have much money, and an ancient laptop.

Plus, you know, the whole obsessive RPG thing...

2. Here's my justification for playing:
I suffered through the launch of SOE's Star Wars Galaxies fiasco, and I managed to pick every single broken class/skill. (And this was after beta testing, so I should have known better!)

After I submitted over 100 trouble tickets / bug reports, Sony decided it was too much trouble to track those early tickets, so they wiped their entire trouble ticket database.

But BioWare's behind this new SW MMO....

And I deserve to play a good Star Wars MMO. :) It's only fair.

I've never played a large-scale MMORPG (with the exception of Improbable Island), but I get obsessed with RPGs. Morrowind stole an entire quarter my freshman year of college...

4. Man, I'm just lucky...
...that the RPGs available when I went to university were crap. :D I don't know how I'd do it these days.

5. I'm lucky
that I was unemployed when Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age came out...

I dealt with Oblivion and Fallout 3 fairly well, but I was just working at the time, not going to school; so I didn't have anything I needed to study

6. Heh, that's why I just finished Fallout 3 recently.
I've been so swamped at work I've had to play in fits and starts, which is really an insult to such a great, immersive game.

10. Sniping is just too fun in F3.
I've tried to make a melee character, an unarmed character, etc., etc., but VATS just makes sniping the source of too many belly-laughs for my wife and myself to ignore.

Is that wrong?

I tried melee once, and got bored quickly

It's just not a melee kind of game... especially when you're rushing a super mutant with a minigun

13. SWG
I had such hopes for SWG and it was awful. AWFUL! Bad bad, as Captain Phil would say.

BioWare has a great track record, so I'm definitely in for TOR.

12. Me!
KotOR was one of my favorite games ever, and I have eagerly been waiting for SW: TOR. I signed up for the beta, but so far have not been chosen, which makes me sad.

However, I will definitely play the game when it is released, and I'd love to play with some of my fellow DUers.

14. ...I dunno. I kinda want to make a Sith guild called:
"The Sithereens"

:D

But this will be the game that (hopefully) peels me away from WoW.
May even bring a few of my WoW guildmates with me.

If anyone can topple Blizzard's juggernaut, it's Bioware. And they'll do it with style.

Same deal we did with WAR: One server for Rebels, one server for Imperials? Or should we skip it and just focus on one side?

I think I found it for you. :(
Can't wait until I move closer to work and can bike to/from daily. :)
That'll get the pounds off just in time to put them on playing an MMO. :dilemma:

27. Yeah, really
Stupid name aside, I love Porkins. Because it's a situation in a movie where A FAT GUY DOES SOMETHING. yeah, he dies, but so do most of the other pilots, and not once did he fall down and break something, fart, bend over and rip his pants, or talk about food

26. You may want to keep them on the same server.
It sounds like Bioware's including the ability to switch factions. I've read several articles that indicate that the characters have the ability to move through quest chains (may be extensive) that will let them "fall to the dark side" or "return to the light". I'm sure it won't be easy, and they may limit the amount of times you can do it, but everything I've read indicates that this is a strong part of the game's narrative.

It's certainly an element to the entire Star Wars mythos.

However, according to the http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=94674">FAQ it will not be included at the beginning. But is considered for the future.

Take note: that FAQ hasn't been updated since April 12th, and they've added space combat to the mix (but the FAQ says they haven't talked about it) so there may be other changes.
