I am a wrinkly old forty-odd y.o. gamer so I think the reactions are going :(
However it is nail biting to play. The multi route campaign is quite interesting but the missions can be very finicky. I've had to play it on the easy setting so I can get unlimited saves. (something comes up and I have to stop playing)
It's so tough I'd recommend all the training missions before the campaign, in weapons training you must get a top notch score before you can even attempt to qualify as a sniper/scout.
The optic sights, although realistic, are for me a step down, the military play it as a training tool so they will have stereo goggles and head sensors (the game supports the hardware for both!) however when playing you can't do like in RL and keep both eyes open to 'bypass' the mono optic sight so your quarry can disappear when you try and sight him. I think I'd prefer an old M16A4 with iron sights so you can keep targets in view whilst zero-ing in.
The game as a whole is fast, furious and deadly, I spent most of my time running away and hiding so far (pure cowardice got me through the first mission). I still prefer OFP but I think that's my age, I'm an old Cold warrior. I liked the BMP-Is, M113s and the whole Cold War feel. IMNSHO using a x3.5 optic sight is cheating. Iron sights rule.
ArmA is definately a great game, especially if you like to drool over modern military technology, it's bang up-to-date. Expect modders to come out with up-armoured trucks, humvees and the new GM Cougar soon. You get the Stryker and the nippy Kamov attack-chopper already.
I don't know about the US version but there is a Sopwith Camel bi-plane in the UK-Euro version as an add-in. It is not a crop duster either, you can equip it with bombs and MGs.
