50th birthday today....
...any insights from those who've made the jump into the "later decades...?" (or are these still the "middle ones?")

Any road markers I oughtta keep my eyes peeled for on the journey ahead...?

2. Happy Birthday, Villager!
I'd say you've got another 30 years before those later decades roll around. Enjoy all the knowledge and insight the first half brought you

7. Happy Birthday!
It's all down hill from here! (Haha. No.)

I just celebrated mine 6 months ago. Already you are doing better than me because your birthday is in JUNE and it is probably much warmer and sunnier than mine was. :P I consider myself still very much middle aged. I think once I am 80, than maybe I will start to consider myself as wise and cronish.

Hope your day is wonderful--as is the rest of your life. Remember, the way longevity has been going lately, you're only halfway there!

You might consider a croning ceremony--it's not just for wimmins anymore. (Perhaps call it a "wizening"?) Pagans and wiccans believe that the last third of your life is when you're the most powerful because of the wisdom that comes with age, coupled with the level-headedness of measured reason. Plus you don't have to worry what anyone thinks of you anymore. So you can let it all hang out! :D

11. 50 is the new 30
I hit the big 5-0 about 5 years ago. I had just made major upheaval in my life -- moved from tiny 3-room condo to mini-farm. It's time to live while you have a better idea what you're doing and still have the energy to do it :D

Happy, happy, happy b-day and many happy returns!

12. totally agree....
Age is largely a state of mind.
I feel in my mid 30's most days.

(At 60 I graduated from Grad school...and am
embarking on new career...going stronger than ever)

My only advise is to take exquisite care
of your beautiful Self!

Happy Birthday!!!

14. thank you for posting that, gblady
At 54 I returned to school. It's going to take until I'm 57 to get a new AS degree and until I'm 58 or so to get the 2nd BS. It would take until 60 or so at least to finish an MS, although I'm hoping a double bachelors will be enough.

It's always good to know that I'm not alone at a fresh start this far along. My dentist told me his sister (or SIL) has gone back to school for some allied healthcare...at age 63, following a career as a lawyer!

15. going back to school....
was great. I loved it. I especially loved being older and doing it.
I could see and hear the young ones perspective, and have
my life experience wisdom to throw in the mix. I also
think I appreciated all that I was learning to a much larger
extent than when I was in college right out of high school.
I was able to think more critically about issues than when I was younger.
Loved the research, the writing, would go on for PhD if I had the $$$.

Best of wishes to you on your journey. It's well worth it.

13. Happy Birthday!
I turned 50 in September, so I can't offer much advice since we're the same age ;-)

But here's some anyway - go to the gym regularly and meditate. Does wonders.

25. Both good pieces of advice -- actually, I'm combining 'em on long hikes
on all the local trails I've been away from, for far too long...

Can't believe how much I've missed hiking!

17. It's the best.
Fifty was my favorite and the first time I ever threw my own party. (Not the last.)
I finally didn't care what anyone else thought. That had been the promise at 30, but I didn't get it until 50.
I loved it so much, I never wanted to budge from 50, going with 50(a), 50(b), 50(c)...

Have a great day and many feisty years ahead.

18. Love this! Love all the kind posts! Thanks, all!
While not throwing my own party (but making my own plans, with my sons!), one of the things I am loving about these "advanced" ages is exactly the "freeing up" of worrying about others' opinions -- peer pressure (even government or corporation "pressure," though I guess my trail of posts here -- as with many of us -- reveals that's been the case for awhile...! ;-)

Thanks again, everyone!

:hi:

23. Happy, Happy, Birthday, villager!
I finished my Master's degree when I was 50. Just remember that your vehicle (body)needs more regular maintenance as it ages. Just take care if it & you'll do fine. As others have said, it is really a freedom to shed the opinions of "others" & just be YOU. I LOVE CRONEDOM! It's sooo liberating!
